The first major fight of the night took place between rising welterweight contender Sammy Vasquez and tough veteran Gilbert Venegas.
Vasquez (11-0 7 KO) was the bigger man but didn't start out to fast and felt out Venegas (12-11-4 8 KO). Vasquez established his right hand early though and did great work to the body.
Vasquez used his combination punching in round two and had Venegas covering up from a straight right. He finished the round with a strong left to the body.
Vasquez really stepped on the pedal in round three and opened up with a hard body shot and a big overhand right counter. He finally put Venegas down from body shots.
Vasquez was pouring it on in the fourth as he landed a left-left combination to the body and head and then back Venegas up with a straight right. He finished the round with a hard left hook.
Venegas decided that was enough and quit on his stool between the fourth and fifth round. It was a nice stoppage win as Venegas has been in there with some tough fighters and had only been stopped three times in his ten losses.
Vasquez was the bigger, stronger, and faster man and used these skills to dominate the fight from start to finish.
