The point here is that at this point it would be in the chargers best interest to trade him and get the value now instead of waiting a year or two...
They have value now!!! ???? THATS THE POINT!!!! They might never get someone that good...now or in two years!!!
The best ever.....pffffffd...PLEASE...Tell that too Walter Payton "Sweetness" or Jim Brown...L.T. is very good don't get me wrong but come on he can't stay healthy in the winter months when it matters the most and also Pelle hit dead on you need 2 backs these days...They put too much mileage on L.T. now he is briddle...but still is better than what's out there..God I hope they trade him so the Raiders don't get torched for 150+ and 2 TD'S everytime we face his ASS!
His value is highest right now. I agree that he is a very good back BUT he hasn't produced the past couple seasons due to injury. If they wait and give him another year and he has another bad here they won't get near enough in return after next season.
And remember that Sproles is a free agent so they still need to sign someone to back up LT.
It isn't about who is better. LT is obviously one of the best backs in the league WHEN HEALTHY. But this team proved that they can win without him. Why pay his salary plus an expensive backup when you can get 2 players for his salary and a pick in the draft or two.
You have to keep in mind that the BEST teams in this league know when to get rid of someone who is aging. I am not saying he won't have a good season next year but the Chargers could sign 2 good running backs (say Sproles and Ward) for the same amount of money. That would keep them fresher late in the season and they would do just as much if not more than LT.
Ok so you agree that you need two good backs! In the NFL people are looking for gauranties! Thier job depends on it! I am not trading LT so I can look like a fool!
AKA Raiders + MOSS!!!! I think you need to see trends in the NFL before you coment on them! Your points are empty! Like you wallet Would be if you were THE GM!!!! That is trading LT!!!!
Moss didn't want to play for the Raiders. If he stayed there they would have sucked cause he didn't want to play for them.
Yes you need two backs. BUT they aren't going to be able to afford a guy like Sproles (who is a game changer) if they keep LT.
Listen, in the NFL you have to let guys go when they cost too much for their production. LT is going to be 30, TRADITIONALLY guys with less carries than him fall apart at 30. He has more carries than many running backs that age which could explain why he started falling apart at 28. He is not going to be as productive over the next few years as he was over the past few.
SO by trading him now you get maximum value and you save MONEY under the cap. I am obviously going to lose this debate which is a shame because if you read ANYWHERE on the web you will see many "experts" talking about them needing to trade him.
You are all enamored with what he did in the PAST that you can't see the benefit of trading the guy. Darren Sproles might be a better GAME CHANGING back than LT right now. Michael Turner might be a BETTER running back that LT right now and the Chargers already lost him cause they believed in LT too much.
You said that you wouldn't want to be the fool who trades LT. Well two things to that....1) thats why you are on here and nowhere near the front office of a team and 2) If Michael Turner runs for 2000 yards next season don't you think the Chargers will be pretty upset for not keeping him? Wouldn't they look like fools for that?
Ok GM lets get one thing out of the way!! We are all on this sight so we can have a voice! SO WE CAN compete to WIN!!!! THE BEST FANCASTER WINS!!!!!!
I am a Banker and not a GM!! maybe the sooner you realize this YOU WILL NOT TELL PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE NOT IN THE FRONT OFFICE AND YOU ARE THEGM!!!!!It is a Stupid response!!
The chargers let Turner go because of He was a free agent!!! They Had a back up in Sproles....LT IS NOT a free agent!!!!! THEY HAVE NO BACK UP!!!! YOU ARE LOOSING BECAUSE YOU MAKE NO SENSE!!! TAKE YOUR BEATING AND POUND SAND!!!
Fair enough. I got a little carried away. But still I don't think I am losing cause I make no sense. I obviously think I make plenty of sense.
Your right Turner was a free agent just like Sproles but trades happen and big time names leave teams all the time in this league. It isn't like it is unusual.
The last few seasons LT was probably the best running back in the league and I would have said that trading him and keeping Turner was insane. BUT LT is not healthy anymore. He isn't the back he was two years ago. But he still has trade value. He can get them something in return and they would save his salary to boot.
I never said he was a free agent or anything of the sort. I know who the free agents are on the team and it is Sproles. And I don't think Sproles can be the lone running back on this team BUT you do need 2 running backs in this league to win. SO Sproles is the perfect complement to a back like Ward.
I am not saying Ward is even in LT's league as far as talent. BUT the Chargers don't NEED a talent like LT to win in the playoffs. They proved that this season. SO why not trade a player that can get you solid value in return and add a player that you can win with.
To me it looks like a win win for the Chargers. They get value for a player that is aging (no one can argue that point) and they still have the talent to win now.
I NEVER ONCE said that LT wasn't much better than the other players, he is. BUT he is past his prime and the Chargers have reason to move him and win with other pieces at the position.
Again...I apologize for my response on the last post. I got a little carried away and never meant to insult anyone if I did. And by the way I don't use the moniker TheGM cause I think I am one...its my initials.
LT is the face of SD ...kinda like Tony Gwen was of the Padres....he is more important too the team from not only a football standpoint but a marketing standpoint as well...GM you have valid points ....but LT had his worst season and still got over a 1000 yards alot of teams would take that ....its too early too trade him now maybe in 2 years going into his last year of his contract but look at Marcus Allen he proved to be productive after leaving OAKLAND when everyone thought he was done!....but it is a business so who knows what will happen! don't forget LT has been hobbled that last 2 years he will be 100% again and put up good numbers again!
I put this whole other comment up but it isn't there so I guess I forgot to hit the button. But here was the most important part:
You all say the Chargers are getting the value for LT right? Well look at the salaries from last year:
LT - almost 8 million
Brian Westbrook - almost 4 million
Peterson - 2.5 million
Frank Gore - almost 5 million
Ronnie Brown - 6 million
Portis - 6 million
Michael Turner - almost 4 million
Willie Parker - 4 million
McGahee - 3 million
Derrick Ward - 1.3 million
Sproles - 1.2 million
Now I obviously know that Sproles and Ward are backups which explains their low salary. BUT you could sign BOTH OF THEM for less or the same as LT and get the SAME (maybe more) production next season. AND you would gain in draft picks.
Now to your argument about him being the face of the franchise...that stuff changes. Look at Green Bay! There was a time when Marino was the face of Miami. Players change teams....if the Chargers don't trade LT now they run the risk of overpaying for an under producer. It would be a safer move to trade him and get something and sign or draft a couple guys to replace what he does. He simply isn't worth 8 million right now.
Oh and as to your point about Marcus Allen you have to remember the amount of carries LT has had. In 16 seasons Allen had 3,022 carries and 587 receptions. LT in HALF AS MANY SEASONS has 2,657 carries and 510 receptions.
He is almost to Allen's CAREER numbers in 8 years. WHICH MEANS that LT has taken a lot more abuse in a much shorter time which very well could shorten his career.
Its all about value here, if they wait to try to get rid of him after this year or next, he may not have any value. He could be injured the next year or two and then you get nothing. Its a long term decision and a good one!
What do you expect when he was 70% of their offense he had to get paid a good chunk, I agree with you he is overpaid right now and he has said he would restructure his contract to accomondate the team!. But a contract is a contract it's like if you got the PS3 when it first came out and spent 600$ for it you can't get pissed or feel cheated when couple years later you see it for half price you made the decsion to spend the money so live with it!. But I been debating without my Raider hat on and my charger fan friend reads these posts so I got too also say trade his ASS we don't need him to have his career day against us every single time the Raiders face him!.
Fair enough....actually I did buy a PS3 about a month before they dropped the price but I didn't whine about it.
I haven't heard that he WOULD restructure his deal...I have heard that they MIGHT ask him to do it. But your right a contract is a contract. All I am saying is if they CAN trade him and get a 2nd round and say a 4th round pick for him they would GAIN from the trade.
OK Did you just say a 2nd or 4th for LT?????
I REST MY CASE!!!
First of all....how many accounts do you have on here? It's no wonder I am losing by 5. You have used at least 3 names on this debate alone.
Second...players are VERY RARELY traded for 1st round picks. I was gonna say a 1st and a 3rd but the only idiot willing to make that trade would be Jerry Jones and he doesn't have those picks to give anymore. I would say a 2nd and 3rd would be possible though. Or maybe just a late first.
So did I and yes I DID Whine about it cause it dropped like 5 days later and I stormed in Best Buy and whinned like a baby but they compensated me HE HE!. But now it's Half of the price it's like "Oh well". I knew that was coming sooner or later: sorry for the weak metaphor's!
No question his value is very high right now but this team, city, and Fans need this guy too stay. They could get alot in return for him, But the Devil's Advocate he gets traded to like the K.C. Queefs, Jets or some AFC team or NFC to come back and bite them in the ASS, it would destroy the team. Will see it will be intresting what descion is made!, For the Record he's worth way more than a 2nd or 4th, He is worth a First RD at least with some players attached to that Right Now!, in a few years maybe not!. My friend is getting hurt by the talk for sure cause he loves L.T. and wants him to stay!.
fair enough. and to respond to your earlier comment about not wanting to face him twice a year I agree. I don't want him anywhere near the NFC East...we have enough backs to worry about there.
If I was a fan of the team I wouldn't want him to go either. BUT if I was the owner or GM of the team I would have to seriously consider it.
Yes, I think you have too considering how close the Chargers have come the last couple of years and L.T. is no where to be found in the January Games!, I can see that point of view but that's a huge choice to make for the franchise for sure!
Oh it is a huge choice. But those are the kinds of decisions that either win or lose you a Super Bowl.
Look at it this way: LT has been there 8 years and you haven't won anything yet. So I would rather trade him now and get something in return than let him go further down hill and continue to lose and get nothing.
Listen Boy's I have been signing up all my friend and trying to show them how to use it! i have been here since day one! I am not cheating and never would!! I have integrity and don't need extra votes to beat you two! AJHAJHJHA! :)
But i do enjoy your debates!
I hope you are telling your buds to get on here too!! Stop saying i am cheating i am above that!
