Marve, a 2009 transfer from Miami University, sat out last season while rehabbing an ACL injury. He notes that sitting out for a year really puts life into perspective, “It really humbles you because you don’t realize what you have until you lose it. I’m just grateful Purdue and Coach [Danny] Hope gave me a chance to play, and the University has been very welcoming since the moment I’ve been here. I feel like the team is more of a family here [than at Miami]; we are very united as a team and we push each other to make each other better every day, which creates a great team atmosphere.” Marve made 11 consecutive starts for Miami during the 2008 season, leading the ‘Canes to five consecutive wins in that stretch. He threw for 1,293 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 116 of 213 attempts (54.5 percent). Miami finished 7-6 overall and lost the Emerald Bowl to California, 24-17. When asked to size up Robert Marve’s game, Coach Hope responded, “He’s a damn good quarterback. We have looked at him since he was a senior in high school and to have the opportunity for him to come in and be able to play for Purdue makes us very excited to get him out on the field to make some plays for us this season. From a leadership standpoint Robert is an excellent leader for our team. We don’t have a lot of seniors this season and we are looking for leaders to step up at each position.” Marve was named Florida's Mr. Football and a member of the Parade All-America team as a senior at Plant High School in Tampa, Florida. He also broke Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow's state records for both passing yards (4,380) and touchdowns (48) while playing in Tampa. When asked about the transition from Florida to the Midwest, Marve said he is excited about playing in Purdue’s spread offense because it “is better suited for me in comparison to Miami because it’s very similar to the offense we ran in high school. It frees the quarterback up to make plays, which has helped slow the game down for me and allowed me to be more comfortable in the offense.” Purdue fans can only hope the flashes seen from Marve in high school can transfer themselves to the Midwest. We will soon find out as the Boilermakers hit the field in training camp in less than a month, and kick off in South Bend September 4th.
