2013 NFL Draft Recap: New Orleans Saints
Round 1, Pick 15 (15): Kenny Vaccaro/SS/Texas. Star Impact: ✪✪✪✪
Conversant, can play either safety spot and even line up in the slot effectively, like he did against Tavon Austin versus West Virginia. Not extremely fast, nor strong but his toughness shows, especially when taking on blockers against the run. He played through various injuries during his Longhorns career. Has been praised by coaches for his work etic and attitude. While his stat sheet might not jump out at you on paper, on the field Vaccaro instantly becomes one of the most versatile safeties in the entire NFL. He will be used at multiple positions.
Round 3, Pick 13 (75): Terron Armstead/OT/Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Athletic, raw, powerful small school product, who competed well enough at the Senior Bowl to show that he has all the makings of a left tackle. Will need to be coached up and it may take a season or two until he reaches that potential but the tools are there. Quick burst off line of scrimmage; flexible and plays with a bit of a chip. Record-setting track and field standout in the shot put during high school and college; eight–time SWAC champ. Ran fastest forty-yard dash of any offensive lineman in the history of the NFL Scouting Combine (4.71), at 306 pounds!
Round 3, Pick 20 (82) (From CHI via MIA): John Jenkins/DT/Georgia. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
The Saints were able to pick up the gargantuous space eater by trading backup running back Chris Ivory for this selection. The former JUCO transfer commands double teams. He showed surprisingly good athleticism at pro day. Will help boost run defense immediately. Stamina could become an issue; he once weighed 370 pounds. Most likely will play first and second downs. Think Gilbert Brown.
Round 5, Pick 11 (144): Kenny Stills/WR/Oklahoma. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Speedy, acrobatic athlete with a quick first step and reliable hands. Has a second gear to burn past corners. Feisty attitude and willing blocker. Major maturity concerns; has several off-the-field incidents, including DUI. Constantly yapping on the field. Could be the piece team needs to replace Devery Henderson as offensive deep threat. Father played six seasons in NFL.
Round 6, Pick 15 (183): Rufus Johnson/DE/Tarleton State. Star Impact: ✪✪✪½
Size/athleticism combo player, known for his pass-rush prowess—had 10 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss as senior. Also more than adaquete stopping the run, high motor and aggressive style of play. College defensive end who played with his hand in the dirt and will transition to outside linebacker in Roby Ryan’s 3-4 scheme. Don’t be fooled by Division II label, he’ll exceed expectations. Third player drafted in school history, last since James Dearth (1996).
UDFA Watch (O): Shawne Alston/RB/West Virginia. Plodder. short-yard/goal line specialist.
UDFA Watch (D): Chase Thomas/LB/Stanford. Smart, blitzing outside backer; 3-4 experience.
Overall Impact Factor: 3½★
