2013 NFL Draft Recap: Minnesota Vikings
Round 1, Pick 23 (23): Sharrif Floyd/DT/Florida. Star Impact: ✪✪✪✪
Was bypassed by more than half the teams in the NFL due to short arms and lack of pass-rushing ability but the Vikings are ecstatic to have him. Short area quickness and good hand movement are biggest strengths. Had rough upbringing in Philadelphia as youngster. Suffered a torn ACL in high school. Will serve as Kevin Williams’ three-technique protégé and eventual replacement in the seasons to come.
Round 1, Pick 25 (25) (From SEA): Xavier Rhodes/CB/Florida State. Star Impact: ✪✪✪✪
Physical, press man cover corner with fluid hips, excellent backpedal and tenacious mentality. Suffered bad knee sprain as a junior and a hand injury that ended his freshman season after two games. A mirror, outside corner who fills a huge void created by departure of Antoine Winfield. Highest defensive back selected from Florida State since 2006 (Antonio Cromartie).
Round 1,Pick 29(29)(From Patriots):Cordarrelle Patterson/WR/Tennessee. Star Impact: ✪✪✪½
Tall, long frame with big-play burst. Will make an immediate impact on special teams but not quite fundamentally sound in his route running. Had 300+ rushing yards this past year at Tennessee and could be used on end-arounds and bubble screens. Didn’t interview well at combine—made poor impression on teams. Vikings surrendered three draft picks for this pick.
Round 4, Pick 23 (120): Gerald Hodges/OLB/Penn State. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
One of the better linebackers in pass coverage in this draft. No stranger to adversity; converted from safety to linebacker as a freshman, broke his leg as a sophomore, endured the Jerry Sandusky scandal as a junior. Will help smooth the transition of Erin Henderson moving inside.
Round 5, Pick 22 (155): Jeff Locke/P/UCLA. Star Impact: ✪✪
Left-footed punter, received high praise from most but punt average is nothing special. Gets good hang time but biggest strength is on kickoffs. Hit 51-yard field goal. Also holds.
Round 6, Pick 28 (196) (From DEN via PHI and TB): Jeff Baca/OG/UCLA. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Started 20 games at tackle and 25 at guard, which is where he’ll line up for Vikings. Had best three-cone and shuttle times of any offensive lineman at the combine. Struggled academically early on in his career and broke his ankle as a sophomore. Could be ready to play now.
Round 7, Pick 7 (213) (From ARZ): Michael Mauti/ILB/Penn State. Star Impact: ✪✪
Passion, drive, heart and determination apparently outweighed medical history. Mauti has torn both ACLs, suffered ankle and shoulder injuries and is coming off a knee injury. Can’t cover. Will be reunited with his fellow ‘Linebacker U’ teammate Hodges. Father played in NFL.
Round 7, Pick 8 (214) (From BUF via SEA): Travis Bond/OG/North Carolina. Star Impact: ✪½
Tall, wide, long-armed intimidating presence who relies on power. Slow-footed, liability versus speed guys. Appropriately nicknamed “Tree Top,” dropped forty pounds prior to senior season.
Round 7,Pick 23(229) (From MIN via NE/TB): Everett Dawkins/DT/Florida St. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
A converted defensive end who displays explosive first step and served as disruptive force, getting in the backfield and often times beating double-team coverage. Limited pass-rush skills.
UDFA Watch (O): Rod Smith/WR/Florida State. Pro-type size/speed, never fulfilled potential.
UDFA Watch (D): Anthony McCloud/DT/Florida State. Wide-body who moves well laterally.
Overall Impact Factor: 3½★
