2013 NFL Draft Recap: Denver Broncos
Round 1, Pick 28 (28) Sylvester Williams/DT/North Carolina. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Surprise quickness at 315 pounds, with agility to create disruption in the backfield and get after the quarterback. Once weighed 370 pounds. Played one year of high school football, quit the game, came back to Coffeyville CC before landing at UNC. Off-field issues are too long to list. Broncos team brass stated that they have done their due diligence on his background and have no concerns about maturity or coachability issues. Figures as a rotational player early on next to Terrance Knighton and Kevin Vickerson.
Round 2, Pick 26 (58) Montee Ball/RB/Wisconsin. Star Impact: ✪✪✪1⁄2
Straight-line runner who shows good vision and patience. Solid in pass protection and displayed reliable hands coming out of the backfield in college. Has looked like a natural pass- catcher early on during rookie camp. Had more carries (356) than any back in the NFL this past season in just 14 games and nearly 700 touches the past two years combined. Fits the zone run blocking scheme. Expect him to be workhorse back in Denver and continue the trend of seeing significant touches. High praise from John Elway who made comparison to Terrell Davis.
Round 3, Pick 28 (90) Kayvon Webster/CB/South Florida. Star Impact: ✪✪1⁄2
Speedy, physical corner who plays like a safety. Has the size and toughness to cover big play tight ends. Will get his nose dirty and step up against the run (82 tackles in 2012). East-West Shrine Game standout. Struggles against the double move. He will be used in sub-packages as a nickel/dime DB on passing downs but could develop into a starter down the road. May also be a return man candidate.
Round 5,Pick 13(146) (MIA via GB) Quanterus Smith/DE/Western Kentucky. Star Impact: ✪✪
Four-year starter who was leading the nation in sacks (12.5) through the first ten games of the year until a torn ACL ended his season prematurely. While he might not be able to contribute until year two, he brings burst off the edge, as well as the range and length to be a real threat as a blitzer. Had three sacks against Alabama.
Round 5, Pick 28 (161) Tavarres King/WR/Georgia. Star Impact: ✪✪1⁄2
Rangy, quick and fundamentally sound route runner that was able to develop into a hands catcher this past season. Has struggled with drops in the past. A bit undersized and outmatched physically against bigger, stronger defensive backs. Known for strong work ethic and effort. Started 39 games for the Bulldogs and finished his career ranked third all-time at UGA with 21 receiving touchdowns and fourth all-time with 2,602 receiving yards.
Round 6,Pick 5(173)(PHI via CLE/SF/GB) Vinston Painter/OT/Virginia Tech. Star Impact: ✪✪✪
Agile, athletic big man who posted a remarkable 4.56 shuttle time—an excellent pull blocker. Multifaceted skill-set to play all positions along the offensive line and will be used as an extra tackle in jumbo sets but could be a long term option as a swing man for Denver.
Round 7, Pick 28 (234) Zac Dysert/QB/Miami (OH). Star Impact: ✪
Elected team captain in each of the past three seasons. Will push Brock Osweiler for the backup job behind Peyton manning. While he has upside, his dedication to the game has been questioned and he has been dubbed a ‘surfer dude’ by some NFL scouts.
UDFA Watch (O): Lucas Reed/TE/New Mexico. Fastest shuttle time of any tight end in draft.
UDFA Watch (D): Lerentee McCray/DE/Florida. Battled through a shoulder injury in 2012.
