A closer look into the New York Giants legendary draft of a year ago.
The NY Giants selected a total of eight players in last year's draft and have received high grades for not only their early round choices like cornerback Aaron Ross (1st round) and defensive lineman Jay Alford (3rd round), but also for "Day Two" finds like tight end Kevin Boss (5th round), safety Michael Johnson (7th round) and running back Ahmad Bradshaw (7th round). However, an interesting note on that class of eight is that not one of the players selected were ever invited in for a private visit with the Giants, according to a team source. Additionally, when contacted several of those eight players agreed with that by saying they had no close contact with the Giants or team officials in the days or weeks leading up to their selection. The Giants are not the only team that uses this type of philosophy, but it can potentially be traced back to the fact that they have a younger front office and scouting department now than in past years, starting with GM Jerry Reese (44 years old) and College Scouting Director Marc Ross (34 years old). Many of the younger run front offices are now using the visits to keep track of future information on prospects they feel will take 3-4 years to develop, so they now have a file on a great volume of players for when this year’s class of draftees hits the free agent market down the road. Other advancements in technology and the internet also has allowed those who have openly accepted these new methods as being necessary means of keeping up with all the rumors, speculation and sometimes unearthed factual material on players as a way to comprise scouting reports with greater detail than ever before. The decisions made throughout the draft day weekend can come down to the smallest of factors, so the decision-makers inside all “War Rooms” are making sure they have not left any stone unturned.
