VIDEO: NFL Draft Chalk Talk -- Nick Foles
SCOUT NOTEBOOK
2011 Preseason Draft Insider: At 6’5” and 235 pounds, Foles has prototypical size and is an underrated athlete. As a junior the Wildcat signal caller completed 67 percent of his passes, but he needs to improve his decision making. More specifically, Foles has a tendency to force passes into coverage. He threw an interception in all but three games in 2010 and was picked off three times in the Alamo Bowl. He has some of the same physical tools as Missouri product Blaine Gabbert, who was the 10th overall choice in the 2011 NFL Draft. - Draft Insider: Top 10 Senior Quarterbacks
2010 Preseason Scout's Take: The 2009 Wildcats were a fourth-quarter defensive stop against Oregon away from playing in the Rose Bowl, and their eight regular-season wins were the most for the Arizona program since 1998. Foles took over full-time in a week-four win at Oregon State which was spearheaded by his three-touchdown performance. He out-dueled Andrew Luck with a 415-yard showcase game, tossed four scoring strikes in an overtime loss to eventual Pac-10 champ Oregon, and led Arizona to an upset victory at USC. The Texas native has prototypical size at 6’5” and 245 pounds and is blessed with a strong arm. The Arizona offense relies mostly on short and intermediate pass plays, so it will be interesting to see if they open it up and allow Foles more opportunities to stretch the field. The Oregon loss was the seventh straight game in which Foles completed over 60 percent of his passes. However, it must be noted that in each of Arizona’s final three contests he completed less than 56 percent of his passes. With better mechanics and more confidence from the coaching staff, Foles will have the opportunity to both improve on his overall accuracy and make more big plays in the passing game. The Michigan State transfer has found a home in the desert and could leave the Pac-10 program as the school’s most prolific passer.
Quote of Note: “The most outstanding thing is his leadership. Coach Stoops has been on us about having more leadership within the team, and I feel it hit Nick the hardest. With him being the quarterback, he felt like he had to be the one to step up. His leadership skills have gotten a lot better and a lot more aggressive.” – Arizona wide receiver Juron Criner on Nick Foles
LATEST NEWS
08/26/11 - "He's really taken it to another level," Mike Stoops said. These days, Stoops openly gushes over Foles' ability to throw the ball deep. He said Foles will be playing on Sundays in the NFL, and for many years to come. The coach even declared his offensive intentions to the world, stating he'll throw the ball 50 times a game if necessary. "I think Nick is inspired by other people's success and the fact that he doesn't get a lot of notoriety," Stoops said. "He's out to prove his point." Source: AZcentral.com
08/22/11 - Discovers Allergies, Fixes Food Habits - QB Nick Foles discovered in the offseason he was allergic to milk, eggs and whey. He changed his dietary habits, including cutting out whey protein shakes after workouts. "I noticed a huge difference in the weight room, and my body fat going down," Foles said. He is still about 245 pounds, but he is leaner -- about 8 or 9 % body fat -- after discovering food allergies and changing his diet. The upshot should be a more athletic Foles. "I'm starting to feel more comfortable moving around, making plays with my feet," he said. Source: CBS Sports
07/28/11 - On Attending Manning Camp - Nick Foles hung out with the Mannings this summer. Yeah, those Mannings. NFL stars Peyton and Eli Manning were as nice as could be. "They were really just normal, good guys," Foles said Tuesday. "You never see them in trouble. There's a reason." Foles also spent time with their "awesome" father, Archie, while serving as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy. Held each year in Thibodaux, La., the academy features college stars serving as camp counselors to high schoolers, with America's first family of quarterbacking looking on. "The one thing I took away from it was, I felt confident," he said. "It was the first time I'd ever really gone against those guys. There's no doubt in my mind I can measure up against anyone." 05/17/11 - Looks To Re-Write ASU Record Book - Nick Foles, who began his career at Michigan State, could leave Arizona with numerous school passing records if he continues to perform to his usual standards. In two seasons, he has passed for 5,677 yards and 39 touchdowns. Last season, he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns despite missing two games. He completed 67.1 percent of his attempts. He threw multiple touchdown passes in six games and passed for 300 yards in five. Source: Rivals.com
10/19/10 - Injury Update - Arizona junior QB Nick Foles, who we ranked #4 among prospects at the position for the 2011 draft, is expected to miss at least 2-3 weeks with a sprained knee suffered in last weekend’s win over Washington State. – Source: GBN Report
10/17/10 - Painful Win For Wildcats - Saturday's victory was sullied by news that Foles, who left the game in the second quarter with what appeared to be a dislocated right kneecap, will miss at least the next two games. Coach Mike Stoops said Foles would miss "probably two to three weeks" with what he said was a knee sprain, but offered few other details. "I'm not going to get into the severity of the injury," he said. Foles was injured with 14 minutes remaining in the first half; he had just released a pass to Travis Cobb when Washington State defensive end Travis Long rolled over his right leg. Foles grabbed at his knee before he hit the ground, and stayed there for four long minutes. - Source: Arizona Daily Star
07/31/2010 - Season Preview - On his trip to New York with the other quarterbacks..."They took four of us to Bristol, Conn. and to New York and it was a unique experience for us. It was neat being around them. Every team has a great quarterback in the Pac-10. It was fun going out to the East Coast and spreading the Pac-10. It was just neat being around them. They are all great guys, very humble. You can tell they are great leaders on their teams. We talked about football a bit, but it was just fun hanging out with them. They carry themselves very well." On the receiving corps...Losing Dean was tough, but we will have guys step up. Juron is just a play-maker and he is even better this year. You have David Douglas, Travis Cobb and Gino Crump." On how he feels this season with his experience..."It is a lot different. I got to start nine games and I have that experience under my belt. We have a offensive strategy set up. I have confidence going into the off-season. As a quarterback I am a leader on and off the field. You have to do the right things." - Arizona Wildcats Junior quarterback Nick Foles, PAC-10 Football
