Skinny: Nick Fairley has decided to declare for this year’s draft just like his teammate Cam Newtown and much like Newton, Fairley projects as a very high selection after a year that netted the Tigers a National Championship. Fairley was unstoppable during stretches of the 2010 season and showed the ability to be an elite interior pass rusher because of his brute strength and active hand usage. The junior from Mobile, Alabama turned in a stellar 2010 campaign in which he was named to the All-American first team and awarded the Lombardi Rotary Trophy. He is coming off a dominating performance in the BCS Championship game, notching one sack, three tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Projected: Top-10 Pick

LATEST NEWS

12/09/10 - The Rotary Club of Houston announced today that Nick Fairley, a junior defensive tackle from Auburn University, is the winner of the 2010 Rotary Lombardi Award, presented annually since 1970 to the nation's top college football lineman (offense or defense). In addition to outstanding ability and performance, the award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the discipline of the late coach, Vince Lombardi. Fairley led Auburn, nation's number one team, with a school-record 21 tackles for loss on the Tiger's road to the BCS national championship game on January 10 against Oregon. He ranks second in the SEC with 10.5 quarterback sacks and has 55 tackles this season, including 31 solo stops. He recovered two fumbles, forced one fumble, intercepted a pass and recorded 21 quarterback hurries. The junior from Mobile, AL is expected to declare for the upcoming 2011 NFL Draft. He is currently ranked as the No. 2 defensive tackle, according to the NFL Draft Bible Big Board, which includes draft-eligible underclassmen.

10/14/10 - Nick Fairley likes to talk: "You have to be nasty down there. You can't be a nice guy playing D-line." Speaking of Fairley, he refused to give himself credit for being a beast this year (5 sacks, 11.5 TFL, both tops in the SEC), spreading it around to the rest of the defensive line. He did reveal that it helps to be mean, however: "You've got to be angry. You can't be nice playing in the trenches. If you come up being nice, they're going to bully you around." He also informed us that he had another year of eligibility left when asked if he was going out for the NFL Draft next year. He said he was "most likely" staying at Auburn and that he hadn't thought much about what it would take him to leave yet. – Opelika-Auburn News

Scout's Notebook

10/16/10 - vs. Arkansas - Nick Fairley used a terrific swim move to break through the line and stop Knile Davis at the line of scrimmage. Early on in the second quarter he got to Mallett and applied enough pressure to force a bad throw. On the play, he knocked Mallett to the ground and ended his day. He continued to terrorize the quarterback after he knocked Mallett out of the game, chasing down backup Tyler Wilson late in the second to record his first sack of the day. Fairley had another solid performance, regardless of what the score might suggest. - Scout's Notebook: Arkansas @ Auburn
