SCOUT'S TAKE

Pros: There were few, if any, players that made more of an impact on their team than Cody did in 2008. He has the size of Pat Williams and the athletic ability of Kevin Williams all rolled into one massive body. He forced teams to think pass more than run, which disrupted any offense unlucky enough to have played the Tide in 2008. He is the centerpiece of the defense and is a dominant force that is seldom moved off his spot.

Cons: Last season was Cody’s first at Alabama after arriving from Gulf Coast Community College, and he missed two games with a sprained MCL. There have been some concerns about his weight fluctuating up close to near 400 pounds in the past.

Skinny: They call him “Mount Cody”, and does that nickname ever fit—the big man is huge at 6-5, 365 pounds. In his first season with the Tide, he accumulated 24 tackles, 4.5 for loss, .5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. But the most intriguing and eye-popping stat is that in his 12 starts, opposing teams failed to rush for over 100 yards nine times. That is an incredible stat when you think about all of the outstanding and athletic running backs the SEC has had. In addition, no single running back broke the century mark rushing in any of his starts.

Stock: Cody has good agility for a man of his size and has the ability to play as a 3-4 nose tackle or a 4-3 defensive tackle. He is similar to B.J. Raji who was drafted 9th overall by the Green Bay Packers in this year’s draft, but Cody is bigger and better when all is said and done…but only if he keeps his weight in check. He was a monster in 2008 and if there’s going to be any change in 2009, it’ll be Cody improving.

NEWS

01.31.10 - Terrance Cody (Alabama) – Thought of as a first round talent in the middle of the college year, but his stock has seemingly dropped. His weight is obviously an issue, but he showed up looking out of shape at the weigh in. Will have to lose weight to improve his draft standing and be a legit 4 down player. – Atlanta Journal Constitution

01.29.10 - Terrence Cody is so discouraged about his 370-pound showing at Monday's Senior Bowl weigh-in, his first two practices this week were "average" because of the distraction. "At first it was kind of difficult," the former Alabama defensive tackle said. "I really wasn't practicing and playing to my full ability. Eventually I loosened up. Maybe I'll do better in the game." Cody, however, is more limber than the scale suggests. He can dunk a basketball and has landed back flips before. "I haven't tried it in awhile, but I can do it," Cody said. His goal is to drop to 345 before the NFL combine in late February. – Orlando Sentinel

01.27.10 - The laid-back Cody, who patiently fields constant weight questions from reporters and NFL types, said he "really didn't look like I was heavy when I was out here running around" in practice. He said he spent only a week at his pre-draft signing class after the Tide won the NCAA championship game in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 7. "I'm going to work harder and start getting back on my diet and stuff, and just do what I've gotta do," Cody said. "I'm going to get my weight down, and when I get to the combine I'm going to be where I want to be." – Associated Press

Senior Bowl: Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody was massive at this morning's weigh-in process as he came in at 6040, 370 pounds with 11 1/4" hands... he would be wise to drop down towards the 350-355 range over the coming weeks as there were some sighs and grins among the NFL evaluators in attendance. – January 25, 2010

01.25.10 - Terrence "Mount" Cody, the mountain in the middle of Alabama's defense this year, tipped the scales at 370 pounds during weigh-ins Monday for the Senior Bowl in Mobile -- which is not a good thing. "It hurts," NFL network draft analyst Mike Mayock told the Birmingham News of Cody's weigh-in. "And it a wasn't clean 370." Cody, who was listed at 354 prior to the 2009 season and at 365 on the Senior Bowl's initial roster, is already somewhat limited in the draft by the prevalent view that he is best suited as a 3-4 nose tackle, when many NFL teams play a 4-3.

01.08.10 - Alabama's top senior prospect is defensive tackle Terrence Cody, a Lombardi Award finalist. Cody (6-5, 365) is a monster in the middle. He played on the nose in college. He's overweight, but if he gets it under control and gets stronger, he can be a force in the middle and should go in the first round. – Houston Chronicle

04.09.09 - What will it take to improve Cody's first season at Alabama? First, of course, is the weight issue. After a first turn through the Crimson Tide 's "fourth-quarter" conditioning program, big Cody is down to 354 pounds. He hovered around 365 for much of last season. "I'm able to do a lot more things than I was able to do when I was a little heavier," Cody said. "I'm quicker off the ball. I'm using my hips more, and just using my hands more, my footwork."

12.28.08 - Despite being a standout at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Cody was not heavily pursued by major programs. Speculation was that because his weight had hovered near the 400-pound mark in junior college, teams stayed away. Alabama didn't and instead put Cody on a diet to keep his weight in check. At 6-5, 365, Cody is considered "unblockable" one on one. Although he suffered a sprained MCL that kept him out of action for a while, Cody is still viewed as one of the best run stuffing prospects at the position. Cody has stated that he plans to return to Alabama for his senior season and will not ask the NFL for an evaluation.
