Pros: Angerer has good size at 6’1, 235 pounds, and not only is a good run defender but also proved to be effective in pass coverage (both man-to-man and zone). In addition to being a fierce hitter, Angerer is also solid in coverage, which makes him a three-down player. He executes great timing on his blitzes and has little regard for his body when diving for the quarterback.
Cons: Angerer came out of nowhere as a junior to lead the team in tackles with 107 total tackles, after recording just six tackles in his first two seasons (Angerer also tied for the Big Ten lead with five interceptions to go along with three pass breakups, to help him earned All-Big Ten second team honors). He should be productive for Iowa this season, but the really answers will come when he reaches the combine and post season workouts.
Skinny: Coming into the season everyone knew about senior MIKE Pat Angerer and he has done nothing to hurt his draft stock. Angerer, whose name suits a middle linebacker perfectly, is second in the Big Ten with his 106 stops through nine games. He is a bit undersized at 6’ 1” and 235 pounds, but has underrated game speed and is a very instinctive defender.
NEWS
05.14.09 - While the key positions sort themselves out, the Hawkeyes have clear leaders on each side of the ball in quarterback Ricky Stanzi and linebacker Pat Angerer. Last year at this time, neither was guaranteed playing time. Now they're cornerstones. "Part of being a college football player is accepting responsibility and growing into a role," Ferentz said. "Rick and Pat Angerer have grown into their role as leaders. A year ago at this time, they were just trying to get to the field. They both got there, played well and had success. Now they can put their hands around the responsibility of being a leader."
05.09.09 - With a name such as Angerer, one can't help but imagine the guy inked and shredding rubber on a Harley. And Pat Angerer doesn't deviate from this idea too much. He has seven tattoos and gets his two-wheel fix on a moped. His first tattoo is befitting for what the star linebacker has become known for: Hawkeye football. It's a Tigerhawk on his left shoulder that he got after committing to Iowa in his senior year of high school. "Basically, I just wanted a reason to get a tattoo," he said. Since then, Angerer hasn't stopped. He got a tribal design on his ribs a few months later after a nudge from his brother, Chris, whose love for body art parlayed into the purchase of a tattoo gun. After that, Angerer was his canvas. "This was, like, his first tattoo," the health and sport-studies major said, pointing to the 4-inch wing hidden on his inner left bicep. He said the wings represent freedom. Then, the three Angerer boys got a spade with four skulls to represent their family bond. Pat Angerer also left space above his heart for his parents, inking their signatures on his chest. He describes his family as closely knit and patriotic. Thus, it comes as no surprise that he got an American flag. The vivid red, white, and blue colors gracing his right bicep are still fresh, nearly 2 months old. "The most important things are family, God, and country, and that is sort of what I live by," Angerer said.
03.30.09 - Senior MLB Pat Angerer led Iowa in tackles and interceptions last season. A giant leap from a sophomore season that saw him log one assisted tackle. Senior Pat Angerer went from the injury list to All-Big Ten candidate in 2008. As a sophomore in 2007, he suffered through numerous injuries and mono. He played in just four games and assisted on just one tackle. As a junior last year, Angerer led the Hawkeyes with 107 tackles and five interceptions.
