SCOUT'S TAKE

Skinny: Granger is a physically gifted player that has shined when given the chance. He is very strong and fast for a man of his size. After appearing in 11 games in 2008, he totaled 20 tackles, 2.5 for loss, and a pair of fumble recoveries. His best season was in 2007 where he amassed 35 tackles, 8.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks, and two pass breakups. He will be out to prove that his back and ankle injuries are behind him and that he can be one of the most productive defensive linemen in the country in 2009. NFL scouts have some concerns regarding Granger’s injury history and his off-the-field issues, but no one is questioning his football ability. In 2007 Granger didn’t play in the Fiesta Bowl after being sent home following an arrest on a shoplifting charge. In the past, when healthy and on the field, Granger has proved to be a quality run stuffer with the ability to get into the backfield and cause havoc. He is a good overall athlete with size, one who can be a force in the middle of the defensive line.

NEWS

12.31.08 - Granger redshirted the 2005 season but posted 4.5 tackles for loss in 2006. In 2007, he had 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. This season, Granger played much of the season with a foot injury and his numbers suffered. He recently underwent back surgery and would likely not be able to work out until next summer.

12.17.08 - Another Oklahoma Sooner will not play in the National Championship against Florida. Defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger underwent back surgery and will miss the game. Granger was used primarily as a backup and had missed the Big 12 Championship because of back problems.

9.18.08 - Oklahoma defensive tackle Demarcus Granger will undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right foot suffered in OU's 55-14 victory over Washington on Saturday. That is a much different prognosis than the one Bob Stoops gave on Tuesday. DeMarcus Granger will miss significant time after injuring his foot against Washington. "I don't know what to tell you there, hopefully he'll be back for TCU but we'll have to see how it goes," said Stoops. A return for Oklahoma's game against TCU on Sept. 27th will not happen. Sources have indicated Granger will miss significant time and could be out for the rest of the 2008 season. Granger, a former Rivals.com No. 1 defensive tackle prospect, came up lame after being triple-teamed by members of the Washington offensive line. Replays appeared to show a UW offensive lineman punching Granger after he was knocked to the ground.

12.31.07 - Oklahoma starting defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger won't play in the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday after being sent home following an arrest on a shoplifting charge. Granger, 21, was arrested in Tempe, Ariz., around 10:20 p.m. Saturday after he tried to steal a jacket from the Burlington Coat Factory inside Arizona Mills Mall, according to a Tempe Police Department report. "Mr. Granger removed an anti-theft device from a jacket and then concealed the jacket in a bag," Mike Horn, a spokesman for the Tempe police, said in a statement. "He exited the store, walking past the cash registers without paying for the jacket. Mr. Granger was stopped by store security, who then contacted Tempe police." Horn said the jacket was valued at about $60.

VITALS

Medical Examiner: Granger missed the final two games of the 2008 season after suffering a foot injury against Washington. He then missed the National Championship game after undergoing back surgery.

Honor Roll: In 2007 he was named All-Big 12 second team by the coaches and honorable mention by the Associated Press.

High School: Granger went to Kimball High School in Dallas. There he was named a Parade All-American, Class 4A All-State, and Defensive Player of the Year by the Dallas Morning News in 2003 and 2004. He also participated in the 2004 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. ESPN.com had him rated as the No.1 defensive tackle in the country. He totaled 79 tackles, 25 for loss, 11 forced fumbles, and 17 sacks as a senior. In his junior season he recorded 68 tackles and 17 sacks.

Personal: Granger is a multidisciplinary studies major. He enjoys electronics and cars, Mustangs in particular. He is the cousin of Indiana Pacers’ Danny Granger.
