SCOUT'S TAKE
Skinny: Last season LeFevour only played in 11 games but still managed 2,784 passing yards and 21 touchdowns and only six interceptions, while completing 66.8 percent of his passes. He also led the team in rushing with 592 yards and an additional six touchdowns. His sophomore season was even better then last season, as LeFevour ran for 1,122 yards and 19 touchdowns, while throwing for 3,652 yards and 27 touchdowns through the air! The Illinois native possesses solid size at 6’2, 227 and is a good overall athlete with a strong arm. The issue question marks begin with how he will adapt from playing in a spread offense and the inferior competition he played against.
Stock: His post-season performance could carry a lot of weight as scouts will diagnose every aspect and see how he performs in an All-Star game before making a final judgment but LeFevour currently owns a third-round grade from NFL evaluators.
Preseason: Last season LeFevour only played in 11 games but still completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 2,784 yards and 21 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He also led the team in rushing with 592 yards and six touchdowns. His sophomore season, when he rushed for 1,122 yards and 19 touchdowns and threw for 3,652 yards and 27 touchdowns was even better than his 2008 season. LeFevour has good size at 6-2 227 and is a good overall athlete with a strong arm. The issue with him is going to be that he played in a spread offense against inferior competition. He could move up if he has an impressive post-season showing.
Our View: At 6-3 and 223 pounds, he has NFL size, he's a good leader and a proven winner who carries his team as much as any quarterback in the draft. The naysayers will label him as a running quarterback and knock his arm strength. LeFevour overcomes his lack of a cannon arm with his accuracy, touch, and ability to avoid the rush. When you watch him play, you’ll immediately notice that he’s a quick decision maker that makes things happen. What works against him is the fact that he’s a spread-offense quarterback along with the fact that he’s faced inferior competition. However, he sees the field well and is a film room junkie. He's a natural leader, an intelligent player, and has the quality NFL teams love most in a quarterback--moxie.
NEWS
02.19.10 - In an exclusive interview with the NFL Draft Bible, Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour stated that he has elected not to participate in the passing drills next week during the NFL Scouting Combine. “I’ll be doing (pretty much) everything except throwing at the combine,” LeFevour said of his plans. The passing drills have drawn criticism in years past as some quarterbacks have more of a comfort zone throwing to their own wide outs at their school Pro Day. “I will focus solely on throwing at Pro Day,” LeFevour added. “Just getting focused with that—only having one thing to do on Pro Day and being able to work with my receivers up at school that are coming out. Putting everything I have into that aspect of it.”
Senior Bowl Riser: LeFevour wasn’t perfect, but he was the best out of a mediocre lot of quarterbacks. The 6’3” signal caller was spot-on accurate on a 43-yard hookup with Mardy Gilyard along the right sideline in the third quarter. He later put tremendous touch on a 32-yard touchdown pass to Gilyard, which was immaculately dropped over the head of Javier Arenas and into the hands of his target. Unlike Tim Tebow, LeFevour also shows elusiveness in the open field by running around Miami’s Daryl Sharpton.
Senior Bowl: Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan) continued to have a strong showing in Mobile, but there are several things he still needs to work on. His mechanics need to be tightened up, but he will change his throwing motion to fit the passing window. He showed plenty of zip on his passes, but didn’t notice a poker “tell” for LeFevour when he’s throwing deep. If the pass is short, he will simply zip it into the window. However, if he’s mentally “winding up” for a deep throw he will gently pat the ball before the release. This is something that can be easily changed, but if we notice it you had better believe defensive backs would notice it too. He will often throw low and away from coverage, and isn’t afraid to take his shots downfield. – Draft Guys (01.26.10)
Senior Bowl: Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan): LeFevour started rusty with some under-thrown passes due to poor footwork on drills requiring to make quick turns and to deliver the ball, but he shook it off as practice progressed, hitting his WR Ford on an out route at the left sideline while rolling left. He had good zip and placement of the ball on the play and this stood out. He had some mix-ups with his receivers in 11-on-11 drills, and he could be seen talking to his coach about the route he expected his teammate to run. His release point is all over the place, and that necessarily isn’t a bad thing. He will alter where the ball comes out of his hand based on what throwing lane the defense gives him. If he has to sidearm the football he will— and he will complete those passes. LeFevour looked very comfortable running the offense, but did have a tendency to lock onto his primary receivers today. – Draft Guys (01.25.10)
01.05.10 - The MAC has a history of sending quarterbacks - Byron Leftwich, Chad Pennington and Ben Roethlisberger among them - to the NFL. As he prepares to add his name to that list, LeFevour once again finds himself having to prove skeptics wrong. After operating in a shotgun offense at Central Michigan, LeFevour must prove he can be equally effective working under center. His lack of a cannon arm also could hurt his draft stock. "The fact he's been in a shotgun so much at Central Michigan, so he has only a few reads before he takes off with the ball, that's going to be the biggest thing," said Rob Rang, a senior draft analyst for nfldraftscout.com. "They want to see if he's able to make the mental leap to more of a pro-style offense. ? We have him as a third-round pick, but I think that's a little high. I would put him maybe in the late third or possibly the fourth.'' - Yahoo
12.05.09 - Central Michigan senior quarterback Dan LeFevour helped the Chippewas to their third Mid-American Conference championship in four years Friday night with a 20-10 win against Ohio University in front of 23,714 fans at Ford Field. Along the way, LeFevour made NCAA Bowl Subdivision history by throwing a pair of touchdowns in the win. He now has 148 combined touchdowns passing, rushing and receiving. LeFevour passed Hawaii's Colt Brennan (2007) and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell (2008), who he was tied with coming into the game at 146. His second touchdown pass set another record for LeFevour. It was his 101st MAC touchdown pass, which eclipsed the mark set by former Marshall great Chad Pennington. "I have been blessed to play with some great players here," LeFevour said. "You can see we are building a program here, and not building it for one season. We are building it to last. I will be proud to be a Chippewa the rest of my life. (This is) a great way to go out as a senior. This means everything to me and this senior class." – Mlive.com 10.26.09 - Central Michigan senior quarterback Dan LeFevour has been selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Award. An interpersonal communication major with a 3.57 grade-point average, LeFevour will earn his bachelor’s degree from CMU in December. He is a three-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection and was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV second team in 2008. The two-year team captain was nominated for the 2009 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team based on his community service efforts. He is the MAC’s all-time leader in total offense and completions (959), and he ranks sixth in career passing yards (10,460) and seventh in touchdown passes (83). Among active Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks, LeFevour ranks first in total offense and completions, second in passing yards and fourth in touchdown passes. - Central Michigan University 09.12.09 - For Michigan State’s showdown with the Chippewas of Central Michigan, I was figuring the quarterbacks in green would out-play the all-time MAC leader in yards, Dan LeFevour. It’s too late for take-backs, so let’s give LeFevour his due. The “Tim Tebow of the Midwest” finished 33-for-46 for 328 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for ten yards and caught one pass for 24 yards deep in Michigan State territory on a throwback pass from wide receiver Antonio Brown. 06.01.09 - The Central Michigan University Sports Information Department reports that football senior quarterback Dan LeFevour has been named a preseason All-American by Phil Steele's College Preview.
04.20.09 - Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour played in just the opening drive of the spring game on Saturday. He was a perfect 3-of-3 for 22 yards in his short appearance.
12.27.09 - Central Michigan Chippewas lost a 21-24 decision to Florida Atlantic at the Motor City Bowl. Quarterback Dan LeFevour went 28-of-40 for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns and an interception against the Owl defense.
12.26.08 - Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour and Florida Atlantic's Rusty Smith, a pair of juniors, entered the season with high expectations, but injuries limited their performance. Now healthy, they'll air it out in tonight's Motor City Bowl. As a sophomore, LeFevour joined Vince Young and Tim Tebow — both Heisman winners — as the only players to rush for 1,000 yards and throw for 3,000 yards in the same season. This year, an injury limited him to 2,531 yards passing and 536 yards passing. He said he feels like he's 100 percent going into the bowl game.
12.01.09 - Since redshirting in 2005, LeFevour has been on a tear and received more awards than space permits. In 2006, he was MAC Freshman of the Year and a First Team Mac selection after passing for 3.031 yards with 26 touchdowns and rushing for 521 yards and seven scores. The following season he topped that mark with 3,652 yards passing and 27 touchdowns and 1,122 yards rushing with 19 scores. This season LeFevour suffered and ankle injury that caused him to miss one game and his numbers are down some with 2,531 yards passing and 19 touchdowns and 536 yards rushing with six scores. Odds are he will come out early depending on what type of evaluation he receives from the NFL Advisory Board.
08.01.08 - Lefevour has made a name for himself as a dual-threat quarterback, becoming just the second player in Division I FBS history to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a single season as a sophomore (Vince Young was the first). While he had four games in which he rushed for over 100 yards, Lefevour is a pass first quarterback who has an above average arm and seems to possess leadership qualities early in his career. Level of competition will be a question but he did produce 656 yards with nine touchdowns and one interception in two games versus Pudue in ’07 including the Motor City Bowl. He has started since his freshman season and was named MVP of the 2006 Motor City Bowl.
