SCOUT'S TAKE

Pros: McCoy is a very effective quarterback who completes a high percentage of his passes because of his accuracy. He is a very smart player who doesn't get rattled easily, and always seems very poised in and outside of the pocket. A good overall athlete, McCoy has the ability to run with the football as well.

Cons: The question marks surround his arm strength and whether or not he’s a “system quarterback”—can he succeed outside the comfort of the spread offense? The answers to those questions will determine where he gets drafted.

Anonymous Scout: I like McCoy but I don’t see him being a franchise quarterback in the NFL. I do, however, think he will get drafted in the first round—all it takes is one team to believe that he can be that franchise quarterback.

NEWS

02.17.10 – More than any other Longhorn, McCoy has the chance to really help himself at the combine. Scouts like his intangibles — he's a winner, he's considered to be a smart quarterback and he's efficient with a great completion percentage — but they worry about the other tools a pro quarterback must have: arm strength and overall size. In Indianapolis, he'll do agility drills and interviews, but won't decide whether he'll throw until early next week. Right now, he's probably a second-rounder. -- Statesman

02.15.10 - Colt McCoy said Monday his shoulder is progressing well enough that he’ll try to throw at the NFL scouting combine. The combine is scheduled for Feb. 24-March 2 in Indianapolis. McCoy is one of seven former Longhorns who will be participating. He’s been in Irvine, Calif., since the national championship game. On the fifth play of Texas’ loss to Alabama, McCoy suffered a nerve injury in his right shoulder. “I see the doctors every week,” McCoy said. “I go through the rehab process every day. I’m healing much quicker than normal.” McCoy said he’s able to throw 40 to 50 passes a day, which is about average for a quarterback in training. – Oklahoma Statesman

01.15.10 - Texas quarterback Colt McCoy said Thursday he has yet to regain full strength in his right arm, which he injured in last week’s BCS National Championship Game, but is making progress and has been told by doctors he should be “100 percent within two weeks” without surgery. McCoy, who departed after five plays in last week’s 37-21 loss to Alabama with what he described as a “dead arm,” answered questions in a Thursday teleconference to announce he was the recipient of the 2010 Manning Award. The honor, given to college football’s top quarterback, is the only quarterback award in which the voting panel is allowed to consider bowl performances. McCoy said he consulted Monday with Dr. James Andrews, a noted orthopedic surgeon, and was told he had a “burner” (nerve injury) in his throwing shoulder that caused temporary numbness in his arm. McCoy said he is on a rehabilitation program that is expected to have him at full strength well in advance of the 2010 NFL Combine, which is Feb. 24-March 2 in Indianapolis. “I certainly expect to do things at the combine,” said McCoy, who is doing his rehabilitation work in California and has selected David Dunn of Athletes First as his NFL agent. — Fort Worth Star-Telegram

01.12.10 - Texas quarterback Colt McCoy reportedly got a positive assessment from noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews when he had his injured shoulder checked out. Indeed, McCoy is optimistic that he will be able to participate in the scouting combine at the end of February. McCoy sought out Andrews for a second opinion after he suffered hat has been described as a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder in the Longhorns’ first series in the BCS Championship Game against Alabama.

01.10.10 - Texas - Texas' football trainer said his staff could not clear quarterback Colt McCoy to return to the BCS championship game after he injured his right throwing shoulder in the Longhorns' 37-21 loss to Alabama. Trainer Kenny Boyd said in a statement released by the school that McCoy "wanted to go back in the game ... (but) we couldn't clear him to do that." McCoy was hurt on Texas' fifth play on offense and the NCAA career leader in victories (45) as a starting quarterback didn't take another snap in his final game. Freshman Garrett Gilbert played the rest of the game. The statement did not address McCoy's prognosis for recovery before April's NFL draft. – Associated Press

01.08.10 - “McCoy's a leader with all the intangibles,” said C.O. Brocato, the Tennessee Titans' national supervisor of college scouting. “He's got good size and a good arm. He's an outstanding runner. Most important of all is that he's a winner. The kid's got a lot of confidence. You can watch them play and see how respected he is.” – Houston Chronicle

01.07.10 - McCoy’s final season at Texas ended abruptly, by a shoulder injury suffered minutes into the Longhorns’ showdown with Alabama in the BCS title game. “To win 13 games . . . and then to come here and it be taken away from you, I don’t understand I guess,” McCoy told reporters after the game. “I am truly disappointed because I would have made a huge difference tonight. We were about to dominate the game.” The injury was described as a pinched nereve in his throwing shoulder. It left his passing arm limp. It denied him a chance to sell himself to pro scouts in a tough match-up against the ferocious Crimson Tide defense. “It would be so easy to question why,” McCoy said. “Why did it have to happen at a time when I’m most needed? I played my whole career to be on this stage. I know what it would have been like had I played that game.” NFL teams will monitor his health carefully. Will this injury limit his ability to work out for teams eager to see how he can make the throws required in a pro-style offense? That would be unfortunate. – StlToday.com

2009 Preseason: Considered by many to be the top-rated senior quarterback, McCoy has a reputation for his passing accuracy and athleticism. As a junior, he completed 76.6% of his passes for 3,859 yards and 34 touchdowns and only threw eight interceptions. He is also a good (but not great) overall athlete and rushed for 561 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 4.1 yards a carry. McCoy followed the leads of Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow by returning for his senior year. He already holds 42 UT records including passing yards (9,732), touchdowns (85), and total offense (10,955). He will look to pad those stats and maybe add a couple more Longhorn records to his resume this coming season. McCoy has also posted a stellar 32-7 record as a starter. McCoy’s number one target, Jordan Shipley, also decided to forgo the draft in favor of winning a national championship before heading to the NFL. The Horns have an eight-year streak of 10-win seasons, and McCoy will try to make it nine. Sharpening his fundamentals and mechanics, though, will be the main focal point for McCoy this season. He has already proven he has the arm and accuracy to make it in the NFL by flashing an astounding 70.2 percent career completion percentage. Look for him to make a statement, a much bigger one, in 2009.

NEWS

11.05.09 - McCoy was efficient in a game where the Texas defense suffocated the Oklahoma State offense. Nonetheless, “efficient” is not a word that McCoy needs to describe his performances if he going to stay on the ballot. McCoy has the opportunity to be spectacular with a home game against UCF coming this week. He could be in line for big day as his best statistical performances of the year have come against non-Big 12 opponents.

01.06.09 - Colt McCoy, the University of Texas quarterback with a gunslinger’s name and a game to match, spent most of Monday night being battered and beaten up by Ohio State. But he would not be beaten. McCoy picked himself up off the turf time and again, and in the end did the same with his team. He fired a 26-yard touchdown pass to Quan Cosby with 16 seconds left to lift the Longhorns to a 24-21 victory Monday over the Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium. It was the 10th time in his career that McCoy rallied the Longhorns to victory and it is hard to imagine any were more satisfying than this one. “I don’t think he’s been hit like he was hit today,” Ohio State safety Malcolm Jenkins said. “But he’s one of the better quarterbacks in the nation. That’s not something that’s going to destroy his game. He did a good job of staying poised and making the throws he had to make.”

01.01.09 - Unlike Vince Young, who left a year early after leading Texas to the national championship, McCoy is returning for his senior season, and perhaps some unfinished business, as the Longhorns' quarterback. Such as the BCS National Championship Game next season at the Rose Bowl and that Heisman he lost to Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford by 122 votes.

12.12.08 - Tim Tebow will go for two against a pair of talented quarterbacks from the Big 12 when the Heisman Trophy is handed out Saturday night. Sam Bradford from Oklahoma and Colt McCoy from Texas joined Tebow as Heisman finalists announced Wednesday. McCoy set a major college record with his 77.6 completion percentage, breaking the mark set by Daunte Culpepper for Central Florida, and is the Longhorns' leading rusher with 576 yards and 10 touchdowns. Texas finished 11-1, with a victory against Oklahoma. "If you're going to play quarterback in our league, you better be able to put a lot of points on the board," McCoy said. "There are just so many good offenses in this league."

12.11.08 - Texas quarterback Colt McCoy has been chosen as the 2008 player of the year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The junior passed for 3,445 yards with 32 touchdowns, while rushing for 576 yards and 10 scores. He is just the second Texas player to win the award, joining 1998 winner Ricky Williams. McCoy was chosen Thursday from a list of finalists that included Florida's Tim Tebow, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree. The Walter Camp winner was chosen by the nation's 119 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches and sports information directors. The trophy will be presented Jan. 17 at the foundation's annual awards banquet in New Haven.

12.1.08 - In his first season as the starting quarterback for Texas in 2006, McCoy was a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award after throwing for 2,570 yards with 29 touchdowns and seven picks. He improved his numbers in terms of yardage in 2007 by throwing for 3,303 yards, but his touchdown total was down (22 touchdowns) and his interceptions rose (18). This season McCoy has bounced back. He has already thrown for 3,445 yards with 32 touchdowns and only seven picks. He has also scored 10 touchdowns rushing in 2008. The 2008 Walter Camp Award winner has stated he will return for his senior season at Texas. The O'Brien Finalists Revealed

08.01.08 - A strong-armed quarterback who can make all the throws, McCoy shows good touch on long and intermediate passes. He has good mobility in the pocket and is more than capable of avoiding the rush. At times he will tend to “throw it up” in hopes of a big play, rather than take the sack or throw it away. His willingness to take gambles is also part of what you like about him as well. McCoy has been known to be very active within the community and his boyhodd idol growing up was Troy Aikman. McCoy suffered a concussion during his sophomore year of high school playing free safety.
