SCOUT'S TAKE
Pros: Black has good size at 6’5’’, 325 pounds. He is a good run blocker and a tremendous pass blocker. He has terrific quickness and agility with good balance. He has a powerful initial punch and has exceptional range to pull and get to the second level. He is known for his toughness and durability, playing 1,915 snaps in the past two seasons. He is the one player on the LSU team that you will likely see on the field for every play throughout the entire season. If Black can establish himself as the most dominating lineman in the SEC in 2009, he should be among the first wave of tackles taken next April. Consider him to be the leader and wrecking-ball of the Tigers’ offensive line in 2009.
Cons: Many question how good Black really is. He has been on one of the best offensive lines in the nation for the past three years. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to becoming the face and leader of the LSU line now that Herman Johnson is gone. Black’s ability has been overshadowed by the enormous Johnson his whole college career.
Our View: LSU is happy that Black decided to come back for his senior season because their where thoughts that he was going to leave early and if he did he would have been a first round pick. Black has great size at 6-5 320, and is very nimble and is extremely light on his feet, to go along with be very quick and agile with good balance. He has a powerful initial punch and has terrific range to pull and get to the second level. With a good senior season and being more consistent, you could see Black rise to the type of level that Jason Smith had and Smith was selected with the second overall pick by the Rams in this year’s draft. Smith is a better overall athlete then Black is but Black could have a better football career when it is all said and done.
NEWS
02.04.10 – Ciron Black, Offensive Tackle, LSU—Black started 53 games at left tackle in the ultra-competitive SEC for the Tigers. However, that doesn’t mean that he’s an ideal LT at the next level. In fact, some scouts think that his strength is as a power blocker, and that at 6’ 5” and 322 lb. he should move inside and play guard in the NFL. Black did play some guard during practice, and he impressed many observers with his strength and technique. One sign that he may have to change positions in the NFL came when Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham, who lined up against Black for a good portion of the game, earned the Senior Bowl Most Valuable Player award. Black is projected to be a fifth-round pick. - CSNWashington
Senior Bowl Slider: This may the last time you’ll see Black listed as an offensive tackle after his abysmal showing. The poorly conditioned trenchman was slow out of his stance and didn’t show any foot quickness to stay with his man in pass protection. What was even more alarming was how Graham outworked him even when the LSU man got his paws on the pass rusher.
01.14.09 - Running back Charles Scott and offensive tackle Ciron Black have decided to stay in school, the two announced at a press conference today on campus.
12.31.08 - After redshirting in 2005, Black was named to several Freshman All-America Teams in 2006. He was named second team All-Sec in 2007. At this point, he has started 39 straight games at left tackles for LSU. The coaches and media again named him second team All-SEC this season. At 6-5, 320, Black obviously has the size to play at the next level but he has not addressed the issue of coming out early as yet.
VITALS
Honor Roll: Black was named second team All-SEC in 2007 and 2008.
High School: Black went to Robert E. Lee High School in Texas. He was a blue-chip offensive lineman and was rated as one of the best in Texas and nationally. As a senior he was named first team 5A All-State, averaging four pancake blocks per game. He only gave up one sack in 15 games that same year.
Personal: Black is majoring in communication studies. When he is done playing football, he would like to be a sportscaster. One of his favorite hobbies is fishing.
Factoid: In high school, Black was teammates with former LSU quarterback Matt Flynn.
