09.27.09 - Texas Tech offensive lineman Brandon Carter, the day after a frustrating last-minute loss at No. 17 Houston, has been suspended indefinitely by head coach Mike Leach, an athletic department spokesman said Sunday evening. ‘‘Brandon Carter has been suspended for a violation of team policy by coach Leach,” said Blayne Beal, Tech associate media relations director. ”His suspension is indefinite.’’ Beal said Leach would have no further comment. A few hours before, Carter had told followers of his social networking account that he’d been suspended and stripped of his captaincy.
SCOUT'S TAKE
Skinny: Carter is extremely athletic and quick for a man of his size. He has incredible strength and nice footwork. His only weakness is his height, which makes him vulnerable to a bull-rush if he gets caught too upright when playing against a larger defensive opponent. In 2007 he helped anchor the Red Raiders’ offensive line, which only allowed 18 sacks in 763 pass attempts. He also helped lead Tech to their sixth NCAA Passing Title since 2002, and second consecutive crown. In 2008, Carter only allowed one sack all season. Carter should once again be the keystone of the Red Raiders’ offensive line in 2009.
VITALS
Medical Examiner: Carter broke his hand during his senior year of high school, which caused him to switch over from defense to the offensive line.
Honor Roll: Carter was named All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, he was named AFCA Coaches’ first team All-American and second team All-American by the Associated Press.
High School: Carter went to Spring Hill High School in his hometown of Longview. There he was named to Class 3A All-State first team by Texas Sports Writers Association. He made the move to offensive line prior to his senior season after playing three years on defense and helped block for a 2,000-yard rusher in his senior year. He earned district defensive MVP honors as a junior and was an honorable mention All-State selection that same year.
Personal: Carter is majoring in exercise sport science.
Factoid: Carter is known for the wild face paint he wears during games, reminiscent of a wrestler.
