05.25.09 - In other Bills news, the team made two under-the-radar additions in this year’s Draft with the selections of guards Eric Wood and Andrew Levitre. Now they are being rewarded handsomely. The two rookies have been taking first-team reps at OTA’s and are projected to start at right and left guard respectively. Fellow rookies Aaron Maybin and Shawn Nelson have been taking the majority of their reps with the second team.

School Bio

1.23.09 - Shawn Nelson surprised with his ability as an in-line blocker, particularly when he man-handled Rey Maualuga, throwing him down to the ground in a one-on-one blocking drill. Nelson really helped himself this week–everyone knew he could catch the football and if he continues to show this type of ability as a blocker, his stock will only continue to rise. - The NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl

1.21.09 – Shawn Nelson was a willing, strong blocker in blitz pickup, although he was beaten soundly more than once. He did throw Clay Matthews (DE/OLB-USC) to the ground in the drill. He dropped a few passes, but he also got low to catch a TD late in the practice. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl

1.20.09 – Shawn Nelson is looking like a good candidate to shoot up draft boards as a Dustin Keller-esque talent. He's not as athletic as Keller, but he's got natural hands and great strength after the catch. He is smooth and fluid in his routes and looks like an oversized wide receiver out there. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl

1.20.09 – Has really gained the attention of everyone watching the tight end position. He is smooth in his routes, catching most balls with his hands and then accelerating well in the open field. Appears to be about 4.6 40-time and then has done much better than expected in terms of his in-line blocking. Was able to block USC linebacker Ray Maualuga to a standstill during pass rush drill. Still needs to get bigger/stronger in the upper-body, but the effort and production has been there throughout both practices. - The NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl

1.19.09 – Shawn Nelson had the natural hands and fluid athleticism of a wide receiver. His hands catching was textbook, and maybe better than any of the South wideouts. He also got open easily against the South linebackers. Look for him to rise up draft boards if he continues this performance. Southern Mississippi TE coach and former Carolina Panther Kris Mangum watched Nelson intently from the sidelines. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl

Scout's Take - 7.1.08

Can he gain 15 pounds and maintain his forty time? If so, Nelson could be a day one prospect and will fly up this board. A four-year starter, Nelson has accumulated over 30 receptions and at least 450 receiving yards in each season at Southern Miss.
