Exclusive NFL Draft Journal - 1.10.09
CFI: Generation Next: Ramses Barden - 10.19.08
1.23.09 - Ramses Barden had trouble adjusting to playing against a higher level of competition. Even with his big school size, Barden had some trouble getting off jams at the line of scrimmage. - The NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl
1.21.09 – The only thing small about this wideout is the competition he played against in college. At over 6'5 and 225 pounds with mittens for hands, Barden is among the biggest and longest receivers in the class of 2009 and the Football Championship Subdivision stud is as productive as any wide receiver not named Michael Crabtree. He will pass the eye test for sure, but how will he fare on the field against big-school competition? This week of practice at the Senior Bowl and the game on Saturday is Barden's best opportunity to show NFL scouts that he belongs with the big boys. With former FCS stars Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Arizona), Tim Hightower (Arizona) and Joe Flacco (Baltimore) helping their teams advance deep into the playoffs in the NFL, you can be sure Barden will be given every opportunity to prove just that. - The NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl
1.21.09 – Ramses Barden has looked more ordinary by the day. He was jammed way too easily by Keenan Lewis. Barden looks slow off the line and doesn't instinctively use his height advantage, although the latter is something that can come with time. He does continue to display good natural hands and he could be a good role player even if his game doesn't develop. 1.21.09 – MOBILE, Ramses Barden(Cal Poly) has looked more ordinary by the day. He was jammed way too easily by Keenan Lewis. Barden looks slow off the line and doesn't instinctively use his height advantage, although the latter is something that can come with time. He does continue to display good natural hands and he could be a good role player even if his game doesn't develop. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl
1.20.09 – Ramses Barden was beating the jam with force, although the suddenness into his route was not there. He looked very slow on a reverse, and takes too much time to build up a head of steam. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl
1.20.09 - The 6-foot-6, 227-pound Barden quickly has made an impression on his coaches, teammates and those watching from the sideline and stands. "He's not wide-eyed here - he belongs," said Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard, a member of the staff coaching the North squad. "The overused word on him between now and the draft will be 'raw' because people will say small school and this, that and whatever. "He's better than raw." Penn State's Derrick Williams, the nation's top-rated recruit in 2005 and an All-Big Ten selection in 2008, said Barden, his North teammate, is as good as any receiver in Mobile. "He's definitely impressed me," said Williams, who admits he'd never heard of Barden until a few days ago. Former Denver receiver Steve Watson said Barden reminds him of Broncos Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds and nicknamed "The Beast." "With a lot of big wide receivers, it depends if they ends up in the right situation," said the 6-foot-4 Watson, a six-year starter for the Broncos (1981-86) who coached receivers under former Denver coach Mike Shanahan.
1.19.09 – Great natural size, long, lean frame and did not appear to be 227 pounds as he did not have much fat on his body. Not a natural route runner. Had some trouble adjusting to similar level of competition in terms of ability, caught some balls against his body. Will still do well on jump balls or vertical routes, but he had some issues gathering himself and accelerating in-and-out of his cuts. - The NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl
1.19.09 – Ramses Barden At 6'6" 227 lbs Barden towers over the competition. He knows how to effectively use his big frame to block out receivers, and with his long wingspan has an incredible catch radius. Ramses is not sudden off the line, and his routes were not that crisp. He did catch nearly every pass thrown his way and would make an incredible red zone target. I liked seeing Ramses get down the field and blocking would be tacklers. His blocking technique is not perfect, but the willingness is there. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl
12.31.08 - Josh Buchanan reports that Cal Poly WR Ramses Barden has been invited to play in the 2009 Under Armour Senior Bowl. Barden was named a 1st team All-American by NFL Draft Bible, AFCA, AP, and Walter Camp Foundation to so far be a unanimous All-American. He is expected to be named 1st team by The Sports Network to complete the sweep. Barden was also named the Great West Offensive Player of the Year after catching 67 balls for 1,257 yards and 18 touchdowns, to average 18.8ypc. He is a projected 2nd or 3rd round pick at this point.
12.3.08 - Cal Poly WR RAMSES BARDEN had another stellar performance as the senior closed his record-breaking career with six catches for 108 yards and two scores in the 49-35 first round loss to Weber State.
11.1.08 - Walter Payton Award Finalist Cal Poly WR RAMSES BARDEN finished with six catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns in what might not have been a monster game in the stat sheet but an important game for the record books. It was the 18th consecutive game that he has caught a touchdown pass, surpassing Jerry Rice in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision record book. Last month Barden broke another Rice record for career games with a touchdown catch and his streak is now at 30 games.
10.27.08 - There has not been a more dominant skilled position player over the last four years in the FCS and to this point in the season than Cal Poly WR RAMSES BARDEN (6060, 227). Barden showed why those claims can be made by breaking Jerry Rice's NCAA FCS record with a touchdown catch in the 27th game of his career. He finished the day with a career-high 12 catches for 217 yards and two scores in helping the Mustangs tack 69 points on the board Saturday. He now has 42 career touchdown receptions and broke the school record for career receptions with 181. Barden has now caught a touchdown pass in 15 consecutive games, a school record and just two shy of the NCAA mark held by Rice. This performance also earned him Great West Offensive Player of the Week honors.
10.7.08 - Cal Poly WR RAMSES BARDEN (6060, 220) has accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine game. Barden is receiving 3rd-5th round projections from most league sources.
10.6.08 - The Mustangs of Cal Poly handled South Dakota easily Saturday night and mainly due to the big play of All-American WR RAMSES BARDEN (6060, 225) who caught five balls for 158 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. This was his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season and the 14th of his career.
9.22.08 - NFL scouts have been seen at Cal Poly in full force over the last few weeks due to WR RAMSES BARDEN (6060, 220) due to his size, hands, and ability to dominate. His nine grabs for 176 yards and one score Saturday showed again why many scouts have him in the 2nd-3rd round on their boards despite just playing the first half.
9.8.08 - Though it is early in the 2008 season there is one player who has created a buzz among scouts and media with his outstanding play from Cal Poly in WR RAMSES BARDEN (6060, 220). Barden caught seven passes for the second straight week and posted 131 yards along with two touchdowns in their loss to Montana. His size/speed combo makes him a matchup nightmare for most defensive backs and almost unstoppable at the FCS level. Despite only a 5th round grade entering the year it is safe to say Barden is making a push for the 3rd-4th round range on most team boards.
9.3.08 - WR RAMSES BARDEN of Cal Poly- Barden has knee injury concerns among some teams but his 161 yards and 1 touchdown on 7 catches against San Diego State might help prove that he is fine. Some close to Barden said his knee is fine and don't know where the concern has come from. His frame, big play ability, and hands make him a potential day one prospect if his knee does indeed check out during medical tests at the NFL Scouting Combine.
6/1/08 - Barden is possibly the tallest small school receiver prospect and has the frame to cause match-up problems. He will be a possession type receiver at the next level due to his lack of home-run speed. One red flag is Barden’s knee problems which will be a concern for most teams, and could keep him from landing in the first four rounds of the draft. However, his production (1,467 yards, 18 TDs), big play ability (25.7yac), and size (6’6, 225lbs) make him one of the most impressive prospects in this group. He should earn a 3rd-5th round grade heading into the 2008 season.
