3.30.09 - LB Larry English, widely regarded as a late first-, early second-round pick in next month’s draft, was the top prospect at Northern Illinois’ pro day, which featured 11 players working out indoors on Astroturf with rubber pebbles. English (6-2 1/2, 251) ran a 4.74 and 4.79 in the 40-yard dash and posted a 9-foot, 7-inch broad jump. English chose to keep the rest of his numbers from the Combine.
English has always been one of my favorite subjects. The former Northern Illinois star will pay immediate dividends to whoever selects him. Not only is he a complete pass rusher with great agility and terrific hand skills, but English is also a tremendous run defender thanks to his play recognition skills and long arms to keep offensive tackles out of his grill. In addition, this DE/OLB hybrid is a bright individual that rarely gets fooled by the offense.
The speedy edge rusher would make a fine addition to anyone's 3-4 defense. In addition to his impressive numbers, the kid's got a motor that revs non-stop. He's a hustler and he can flat out tackle, and bring the noise when he does so. I know he didn't play against top competition and there are questions about his size and lateral movement, but English tallied 32.5 career sacks and had 57 tackles for a loss. 1.23.09 - Larry English showed some glimpses as an edge pass rusher. It looks like he put on some weight for Senior Bowl week, but has he robbed himself of some quickness? He picked up his play as the week went on, displaying a variety of pass rush moves, which is how he’s going to make his money on the next level. English looked solid when asked to cover.
