Pros- Monroe has good size and is very athletic. He shows a good punch and is an exceptional pass blocker. He has great technique and feet. He doesn’t take false steps. He plays with a high football IQ and doesn’t cost his team with dumb mistakes. He started from day one and was very productive in college.
Cons- Monroe is not extremely physical and his toughness was often questioned in college. He is not extremely strong and can be knocked backwards… Durability could be a major concern.
Scouts Take- Monroe is a legit top 5 pick. He is a great pass blocker and should start from day one at left tackle for his NFL team. He needs to become more physical and could add some strength. If he works hard he could be in the Pro-Bowl for several years to come.
3.20.09 - Eugene Monroe stated his case to be the number one overall pick on Thursday. The 6-foot-5 3/8, 312-pounder kept all of his workout numbers from the combine, but he did position drills and looked very good. Cincinnati Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander, who has been everywhere there has been a tackle, orchestrated the position drills, and two other o-line coaches also were in attendance.
Monroe is the guy Detroit should take. When you're building something, you must first create a stable foundation...then you can add luxuries. Monroe is a big kid, but he's also quite agile. Strong, with great footwork, he can block for the run and the pass--a true stud who will play left tackle for a long time. Monroe should remind NO ONE of former Cav D'Brickashaw Ferguson. - All Access Daily Dose: Pro Day Impact & Analysis
2.23.09 - Monroe wasn’t really disappointing, but in the battle to get #1 or #2 overall money with Jason Smith, he came in second. He lifted the 225 ten less times than Smith, and looked like the lesser athlete. He’s still firmly in the top 5-7, but Monroe missed a chance to move ahead in the #1 derby. Draft Guys
1.16.09 - Virginia offensive tackle Eugene Monroe will not participate in the upcoming Senior Bowl, according to several sources close to the top-rated senior offensive lineman. Instead, Monroe will continue to train for the NFL Combine with Mike Gough in Florida. He has a much higher grade on most boards than those in attendance at the Shrine Game. Ole Miss' Michael Oher and Baylor's Jason Smith would need solid performances in Mobile to be within 10 picks of Monroe when he comes off the board in April.
Scout's Take - 7.1.08
Pros: The New Jersey product has the length and bulk that NFL teams look for in tackles, with a very strong base. His long arms allow him to excel in pass protection—he didn't allow a sack all of last season. He recorded 20 knockdown blocks as a junior, displaying the potential to dominate. The footwork and positioning are there, allowing him to maintain his balance. Monroe plays hard and is a good athlete.
Cons: You would like Monroe be a bit more aggressive and not wait for the defender to come to him, which could become an issue at the next level where pass rushers have more polished and sophisticated moves. He also needs to do a better job of maintaining blocks. As a run blocker, he does not have ideal speed or agility when asked to go after linebackers.
Overall: Why did 2007 first round pick Branden Albert play guard? One reason was Monroe was handling left tackle just fine—grading out as the Cavaliers’ top lineman in five of the 11 contests he participated in. He possesses prototypical size and if he can improve his strength/technique, he could go in round one. Monroe should be an All-America candidate as a senior and a probable day one selection.
