Pros- Wells is a big back at 6’1’’ 235. He is very powerful and doesn’t go down with out a fight. Despite being known for his hard nose runs, Wells is very quick and athletic. He shows good balance and cutback ability. He runs just as hard in the fourth quarter as he does in the first. He has good moves and a great stiff arm.
Cons- Durability has been a huge issue with Wells, because of his smash mouth running style. He missed the USC game because of an injury and his toughness was questioned. He is not good on sweeps or outside runs. He is not a great blocker and only had 15 catches in his college career.
Scouts Take- Wells has the best combination of size and speed in this years class. He is a powerful runner that has the ability to take it the distance. He was very productive at Ohio State and often showed the knack for making big plays. There are several good prospects in the 2009 class, but Wells could be the most talented of all. There has been talk that Cleveland really likes him and could take him 5th overall. That is doubtful but Wells should land somewhere in the 1st round and crack the starting lineup early next season.
2.16.09 - Chris Wells may have the highest ceiling of any back in this draft, but questions abound about his desire and work ethic. I’ve referred to him as a poor man’s Adrian Peterson, and there were times at OSU when he looked just like that. He has outstanding vision, the power to run between the tackles, and can hurdle defenders in the open field. He is a patient, downhill runner that can spot cutback lanes before they open and he has the elite athleticism to change direction without losing much momentum. During his career at OSU Wells has battled the injury bug, and some question if he knows how to play hurt. - Draft Guys Report On Chris "Beanie" Wells
1.08.09 - Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells announced Thursday that he will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft. "I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, my teachers and the academic advisors for all they have done, and I definitely want to thank the Buckeye fans for all their support, Wells said in a statement. Ohio State has become like a family to me, and it will always be that way. But in the best interest of my family, it's time to move on and take a chance at fulfilling my lifetime dream of playing in the NFL."
12.1.08 - Beanie Wells opened eyes the moment he walked on campus at Ohio State back in 2006. He saw a good amount of reps behind Antonio PIttman his freshman season rushing for 576 yards on 104 carries with seven touchdowns. In 2007, Wells took over the position and rushed for 1,609 yards with 15 touchdowns, which earned him All-Big Ten honors. This season, Wells missed three games due to a foot injury, which hurt his overall numbers (1,091 yards rushing, seven touchdowns), but he has performed at a high level since returning. At 6-1, 235, Wells is a big back with power, but he also has good speed as well as athletic ability as was displayed when he hurdled a defender in the Illinois game. Wells also would easily be a first rounder should he decide to come out early.
8.1.08 - The best running back in the history of Ohio State, according to Buckeyes legend Archie Griffin. An explosive, compact runner, Wells is the complete package. He combines speed, strength, acceleration, vision and patience to let holes develop. He has proven to handle the workload and his bruising running style can wear on opposing defenses, evidenced by several late, game-changing plays Wells has rattled off early on in his career. There’s nothing not to like about this top prospect.
