Pros- Pettigrew has great size at 6-5, 265pounds. He is very strong and powerful. He is known for his great blocking ability. He plays hard and with the mentality to punish the opposing team. He shows soft hands and great athletic ability after the catch. Pettigrew might be the best blocking tight end to come out in a long time.
Cons- Pettigrew is not very fast and lacks the quickness to get open on a consistent basis. He is not a strong route runner and was not very productive receiving in his four years, with just 112 catches and 9 touchdowns. He scored zero times last year for a pass happy Oklahoma State offense.
Scouts Take- Pettigrew is extremely strong and physically gifted. He is great as a run blocker and can handle the opposing teams best defensive player alone. He uses his hands well and doesn’t rely on his chest to help with the catch. That being said he doesn’t offer a lot as a receiver. He runs poor routes and is anything but elusive with the ball. Fumbles were also an issue. Many have Pettigrew as a mid first rounder but his NFL team should know they’re not getting much more than an athletic looking tackle.
2.23.09 - Pettigrew has a very good two-way game on film, so there’s no way he’ll fall out of the first round, but he missed a chance to move into elite prospect range when he put up mostly middling numbers, typified by a 4.85 40 that highlights his limited upside as an offensive weapon. Draft Guys
1.23.09 - Brandon Pettigrew pushed Scott McKillop out with relative ease in one-on-one blocking drills. He is a man at tight end, one of the few legitimate in-line blockers at the position. - NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl
1.21.09 – Brandon Pettigrew impressed us as a blocker, but he just hasn't popped as a playmaking receiver from the TE position. Teams looking for offense from the tight end would be better off taking Chase Coffman or James Casey. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl
1.20.09 – Brandon was getting coached up today about proper hand placement when blocking. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl
1.19.09 – One false start on the day is the only negative for Brandon. His blocking was stout, his hands natural, and he didn't drop a pass that I saw. - Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl
1.19.09 – Stood out as a clear cut above the other tight ends thanks to his natural size and than today showing he can get open down-field and be a solid blocker at the point of attack. Has good, but not great straight-line speed; still carries a mid-to-late first round grade at the moment. - NFL Draft Bible On Location At The Senior Bowl
Scout's Take - 7.1.08
Pettigrew, who caught 35 passes for 540 yards and four touchdowns as a junior, was arrested on complaints of assault and battery on a police officer and public intoxication during the offseason prior to his senior year. He refused to leave an altercation involving 10 to 15 people at a residence in Stillwater and allegedly elbowed an officer in the chest. On the field, Pettigrew can do it all—he has good size, speed and reliable hands. The Texas native has the frame that excites scouts--he is a natural with the ball in hands and has displayed the ability to be a capable blocker. While he isn’t the fastest of tight ends, Pettigrew scored three touchdowns of 30 yards or more in 2007. When he gets his momentum moving forward he is difficult for one tackler to bring down. Despite the depth and quality of tight ends in the conference, Pettigrew was selected as an All-Big 12 First Team selection by the coaches. He came to Stillwater as a blocking TE but continues to improve as a weapon in the passing game. He still has not reached his potential as a receiver and will really help his stock with a solid senior campaign. Pettigrew could ultimately end up as the best two-way tight end in this class.
