51. MATT FORTE (RB)
School: TulaneYear: Senior Hometown: Slidell, LA Date of Birth: 12/10/85 Height: 6'1" Weight: 219 40 T: 4.56 Projection: 3rd Round
Class: 2008 Big Board
Pros: Forte has prototypical size to be a number one back at 6-1, 220. He is a hard runner with excellent vision and has the patience necessary to allow holes to develop. Even when a defender gets his hands on him, Forte is difficult for one man to bring down. He also shows very good hands out of the backfield making over 100 receptions in his career. He proved to be faster than anticipated at the NFL Scouting Combine and even more impressive was his ability to change directions and maintain speed.
Cons: Forte lacks ideal breakaway speed, so it is doubtful many of the big runs he turned in while at Tulane will translate to the next level. He admittedly needs work on his blocking skills, something he was not called upon to do often at the college level. Then, of course, there are the questions regarding the level of competition that Forte put his gaudy numbers up against.
Overall: Some viewed him as a fullback heading into his senior season, but this Louisiana native broke out with a 2,000-yard senior season, proving that the football belongs in his hands. To be fair, Forte was solid if unspectacular against LSU, arguably the toughest defense in the country, when he ran for 73 yards on 16 carries (4.6 yards per carry). He can also contribute on special teams.
Our View: Whether or not he can become a feature back at the next level or is better suited as part of a one-two punch is a question teams will have to answer. However, there is no reason why Forte cannot be a starter in the NFL and he is more than worthy of having his name called sometime in the second round. Only Subscribers Click below to sign up |
