94. CORY BOYD (RB)
School: South CarolinaYear: Senior Hometown: Orange, NJ Date of Birth: 8/6/85 Height: 6000 Weight: 219 40 T: 4.52 Projection: 3rd Round
Class: 2008 Big Board
Pros: The South Carolina senior has a nice frame, with room to get bigger. His body control, vision and powerful legs allow him to be an effective between-the-tackles runner. Add to that his lateral quickness, the patience to allow his blocks to develop and the ability to cutback and it’s clear that Boyd possesses many of the tools necessary for success at the next level. Throughout his career, he has displayed the ability to catch the football coming out of the backfield. The leader of the Gamecocks offense, Boyd plays hard and is not afraid to mix it up.
Cons: Boyd needs to add a little more weight to keep up his productivity at the next level. His lack of bulk will hurt as he tries to overpower defenders, especially if he does not learn to run with a lower pad level. He isn’t a blazer, so don’t expect too many big plays. He seems to get nicked up often, although nothing major. His character is also a concern, as he was suspended for all of the 2005 season for violating unspecified athletic department rules.
Overall: During his four-year stay in South Carolina, he played in 46 games, making 27 starts, including all 12 games as a senior. He bounced back from his off the field issues to become the team’s starting back and leading rusher after losing an entire season. The 2005 season was counted as Boyd’s redshirt year.
Our View: It appears Boyd has learned from his mistakes and has matured into being a legitimate NFL prospect. He runs with confidence and authority and looks like he could be a solid NFL backup player, perhaps more if he can add a good 15-20 pounds without losing speed or quickness.
