84. XAVIER OMON (RB)
School: NW Missouri State Year: Senior Hometown: Beatrice, Nebraska Date of Birth: 2/15/85 Height: 5106 Weight: 228 Bench Press: 17 Vertical Jump: 38.5" 40 T: 4.62 Projection: Third Round
Class: 2008 Big Board
Pros: Consistency and productivity are the first two things that pop out when analyzing the Division II prospect—he’s the first to reach the 1,500-yard plateau four times. He’s a tough, compact, between-the-tackles runner with excellent size—a true power back. Omon sees a hole and he hits it. Many of his yards come after contact as Omon gets low and keeps churning. Throughout his career, the Northwest Missouri St. product has been a productive receiver and has shown a nose for the end zone—he had 98 career touchdowns (38 in 2007).
Cons: Scouts wonder if he has the pure speed to be considered an every-down back—he will never be mistaken as a home run threat. Ball security is a problem—his penchant for fumbling will not endear him to his future coach. He needs to work on his pass protection, which he was not asked to do in college. He also brings wear and tear—1,271 carries before he puts on a NFL uniform.
X-Factor: As productive as Omon has been, one cannot ignore that it has come at a lower level of football—not many running backs come from the DII ranks.
Overall: The senior tailback for the Northwest Missouri St. Bobcats has led the way from day one, setting a school record with his 309-yard performance in the quarterfinals. He led his team in rushing in each of his four seasons.
Our View: There are obvious questions regarding his level of play, but he should not be totally discounted. Omon should be a complimentary power runner Only Subscribers Click below to sign up |
