36. EARLY DOUCET (WR)
School: LSU
Year: Senior
Hometown: St. Martinville, Louisiana
Date of Birth: 10/28/85
Height: 6000
Weight: 211
40 T: 4.55

Class: 2008 Big Board

Pros: A serious big-play threat, Doucet may have the best combination of size, speed and play-making skills of the senior crop of receivers. He catches the ball very well on the move and is able to maintain his top speed after the catch. This allows him to make plays, running away from defenders once he gets a step. He gets off his break quickly and is nearly impossible to cover one-on-one, which is why he excels on intermediate crossing routes and is able to stretch the defense with the home run ball. He’s a tough player who, like Dwayne Bowe before him, is not afraid to put a hat down and block, he will mix it up.

Cons: Doucet does not possess ideal height and could face difficulty getting jammed at the line of scrimmage in the pros. He still needs to work at his craft, needing to smooth out his routes—he will not be able to just get by on athletic ability at the next level. Every once in a while, Doucet will lose concentration, looking up to run before he makes the catch, causing him to drop the football. It seems as if he should be better in the open field, which is why he has been just an average return man despite his speed. Durability may be the biggest concern of all, as with increased playing time Doucet has had trouble staying on the field.

X-Factor: Is Doucet a number one receiver? His best season came when he was a junior playing behind the senior duo of Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis—both of which were first round draft picks in the 2007 draft. An injury two games into this past season never allowed Doucet to prove himself as the clear-cut number one option. In addition to Bowe and Davis, Doucet was part of an offense in 2006 whose quarterback, JaMarcus Russell, was the number one overall pick in the draft. It’s hard to quantify how much Doucet benefited from the talent at LSU.

Overall: Doucet is an excellent prospect that did not have the type of 2007 season many expected, due to injury. He had an opportunity to move into the first half of the first round if he made a similar jump from his junior to senior seasons as he did from his sophomore to junior campaigns when he more than doubled his reception total. He is stocky, strong and not shy about going over the middle to catch the ball in traffic. As a junior, he started only six games, yet Doucet had three more receptions and four more touchdowns than the San Diego Chargers’ 2007 first round draft pick, Craig Davis. He wasn’t himself this year as a hamstring injury robbed him of his explosiveness. He was unable to perform at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Mogollon’s View: Value is very important with this Bayou Bengal, who was once projected as a potential top ten pick. While he may not be a franchise-type player at the next level or even a number one receiver, something tells me he has his best football in front of him—if he can remain on the field long enough.

Quote of Note: "I just want to be a wide receiver that can do anything -- block, run after the catch, run great routes, be consistent at catching the ball, Just a jack of all trades."

-- Early Doucet On His Style Of Play

Factoid: While recruiting Doucet out of high school, Nick Saban said that the Louisiana native was the best pure athlete he had ever seen.

Medical Examiner:

  • 12/3/05—Sprained ankle and missed one game

  • 9/14/07—Pulled groin during practice and missed five games

Highlights of Accomplishments:

  • 2006 All-SEC Second Team

  • Sixth Place, 2006 SEC Total Touchdowns (10)

High School: Attended St. Martinville High School in St. Martinville, LA, where he played running back, quarterback, wide receiver, and kick returner. In four years he amassed 7,104 all-purpose yards and 79 touchdowns and was a first team 4A all-state selection his senior year. He also lettered in basketball, winning a state title his sophomore year.
