Pros: A key cog in the Jayhawks high-powered offense this past season (480 yards per game, 8th in the Nation), Collins proved as quarterback Todd Reesing’s insurance policy protecting his blind side. His quickness, balance and 35-inch reach allows him to keep defenders at bay, freeing Collins up to force pass rushers wide and away from his quarterback. He proved capable of holding his own against the bull rushers but Collins is better known for making plays on the move and picking up incoming rushers. He does a good job of finishing off his blocks.

Cons: The one thing that sticks out on Collins resume is his lack of experience. He played regularly just two years while at Kansas and this past season was his first on the left side. It is assumed that Collins may have a tougher time making the transition to the next level and endure a larger learning curve in comparison to other prospects at his position. He needs to a better job of bending his knees and getting lower, which would improve his leverage against more powerful defensive linemen. Collins will also need to boost his lateral quickness in order to handle double moves in the NFL.

Overall: The Lone Star State native fancied himself as a hoops star until he joined his friends on the football field during his senior year of high school. Extremely raw, Collins red-shirted his first season in Lawrence, playing defensive line on the scout team before shifting over to the other side of the ball. In his first season in Big 12 play, he saw action in eight games, making one start before stepping in full-time as a sophomore at right tackle, where he earned recognition as an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection. The coaching staff challenged Collins when they shifted him over to left tackle prior to the 2007 season. The junior responded by earning First Team All-Big 12 honors.

Our View: A bit of a risk because of his lack of experience and more importantly consistency, Collins is clearly in the second tier among tackle prospects and may have to wait until deep into round two before hearing his name called. However, he is a legitimate left tackle, something some of the more established prospects at the position cannot claim. Had he returned for his senior campaign as a Jayhawk, Collins could very well have played himself into the first round, maybe even into the top ten, making him a high ceiling selection no matter where he goes.
