Class: 2008 Big Board
Pros: The anchor of an offensive line responsible for the most explosive offense in the ACC the past two seasons, Richardson has flashed the ability to dominate at times with his pure brute strength. A naturally big-boned athlete, defenders find it a difficult task in trying to move the gentle giant. Richardson has been extremely durable throughout his tenure at Clemson having started forty-five consecutive games. Leading a balanced offensive unit that has set several records, Richardson has demonstrated above average talent in both run and pass situations. He graduated college in just 3 ½ years in December of 2007.
Cons: Consistency would be the one attribute most frustrating when evaluating Richardson. His poor habit of disappearing from time-to-time is definitely reason for concern. It would be recommended that Richardson shed some weight to help improve several aspects of his game. Getting slimmer and trimmer will not only help out his mobility, but also enable him to be lighter on his feet and enhance his footwork. His stamina has also been brought into question, as he seemed to be worn down late into games on occasion. Unfortunately, not much improvement has been shown from freshman year to senior year and there is a general consensus around the league that Richardson may have already maxed out his potential.
Overall: He contemplated leaving early a season ago, but opted to return to Clemson after he was deemed as a third-fifth round draft grade. He has a lot of raw talent, but needs to work on footwork and conditioning to be good at next level.
Factoid: Did you know that Richardson is the first Clemson football signee to have graduated high school in three years? ((this can be added to last sentence of “pros”))
Quote of Note: “It’s difficult, I lead by example. Some people are vocal, but I’m not very vocal — but I always go out there and give 110 percent effort.”
-- Barry Richardson On Being A Vocal Leader
Murphy’s View: A big, powerful right tackle prospect, Richardson has been labeled by most as being an underachiever. He plays with an inconsistent pad level and seems to lose aggressiveness or motivation at times. Most teams will be scared away from using a high pick on him.
