Class: 2008 Big Board
Pros: Hall possesses speed and adjusts very well to the ball in air and when these abilities are combined with his crisp route running ability, this Crimson Tide is very difficult to cover one-on-one. He also has reliable hands and good moves after the catch--he can pretty much do it all on the football field. During his time at Tuscaloosa, Hall played in nearly 50 games, turning in 41 starts in his career. Hall’s excellent vision allows him to find the soft spots in the defensive backfield, and his natural feel for the game enables him to take advantage of a defender’s vulnerabilities. He is reliable, running precise routes and possessing sure hands. In addition, he does a fine job of protecting the football and always makes an effort in terms of blocking. He has excellent length.
Cons: The only thing lacking in Hall’s game is physical play. He will need to bulk up at the next level, particularly if he is going to be able to beat bigger corners that will creep up and bump him at the line of scrimmage. He has speed, but lacks explosiveness. While he tries, Hall’s run blocking still needs work to be up to NFL caliber.
X-Factor: Although he did not play in a high-octane offense during his time in Tuscaloosa, the Tide rolled when they got the ball into Hall’s hands. As a senior, Hall recorded just three games of 100 yards and all three times he went for at least 140 yards, reaching double figures in receptions twice in those games. However, he also had five games of less than 50 yards receiving, including three in a row to close out the regular season. Is Hall inconsistent, or was it his team? The answer is his team, specifically his quarterback with Hall’s 172-yard game against Arkansas serving as Exhibit A. In the first quarter, as Alabama built a 21-0 lead against man coverage, John Parker Wilson connected with Hall four times for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Once the defense switched to zone, Wilson struggled and Hall was no longer a factor in the game.
Overall: Hall will leave the storied program as the most productive pass catcher in school history, surpassing many records held by NFL Hall of Fame inductee Ozzie Newsome. A near finished product, the wily Hall has enough ability to develop into a solid number two in the league where they play for pay, possessing a good vertical game and the ability to make big plays–he’s a mostly solid performer, with a dash of spectacular. Hall was productive, racking up 60-plus receptions and 1,000-plus yards as a junior and senior.
Mogollon’s View: For some reason, despite playing in the SEC, despite playing at Alabama, despite setting records, Hall always seemed to sneak beneath the radar. In the NFL, he will flourish and surpass some of his more ballyhooed brethren.
Murphy’s View: Hall has the tools to be a deep threat, but has had some issues on and off the field. He flashes an extra burst of speed when the ball is in the air, but has struggled with consistency. His work ethic during his postseason practices will make or break his draft grade.
Factoid: There are many disparaging rumors about Hall on the internet, including one accusing him of choking quarterback John Parker Wilson on the sideline. To deal with this adversity, Hall sat down and talked with coach Nick Saban, who has dealt with his fair share of negative publicity.
