Pros: This Notre Dame product is considered to be one of the most well rounded tight ends of the ’08 class. A bright player who runs crisp routes, Carlson has a good feel for zone coverage and knows how to get open. He is an extremely reliable pass catcher, who is able to make plays on the move. He also knows how to use his body well and can make the catch in traffic. Carlson does a tremendous job of using his hands to make the catch. As a blocker, he uses sound technique, which enables him to get down the field on running plays. Carlson can contribute on special teams having played on punt, punt return, kickoff, kickoff return, point after attempt, and field goal units. At Notre Dame, he was a selfless team player who led by example with a solid work ethic.

Cons: Carlson is not particularly impressive in terms of his speed or strength. He isn’t a dominant blocker at the point of attack and could struggle against the premier pass rushers. Not much of a playmaker after the catch, Carlson lacks breakaway speed and the ability to make moves in the open field. His numbers dipped this season and some question whether his knee injuries have slowed him down. It also calls into question his long-term durability over his career.

Overall: A knee injury towards the end of his junior season has cast doubts on whether Carlson was completely healed last season, as his production drastically dropped. He is still expected to be among the top half of tight ends selected but is not as high on draft boards as he once was. Carlson made up for his poor Combine showing with a strong Pro Day performance. There is plenty to like in terms of talent and intangibles, he has the aptitude to become a starter.

Our View: Carlson would fit best in a two-tight end offense, which would allow him to play to his strength as a pass catcher. He has good, not ideal size but his injury history makes some scouts skeptical if he’ll ever fulfill expectations.
