13. JEFF OTAH (OT)
School: PittsburghYear: Senior Hometown: New Castle, DE Date of Birth: 6/17/86 Height: 6062 Weight: 339 40 T: 5.30 Projection: 1st Round
Class: 2008 Big Board
Pros: The Pittsburgh product has a broad frame, a stout lower body and large hands to accompany his long arms, making Otah a loaded weapon on the offensive line. Already a dominant run-mauler, the hulking Panther is capable of destroying those who line up opposite of him. He has received compliments from his coaching staff, who have noted his propensity to act as a sponge in chalk talk sessions, absorbing the knowledge taught to him in chalk talk and carrying it over to the playing field. Otah scored a 28 on is Wonderlic Test, second highest amongst offensive lineman.
Cons: Not the most physically fit offensive lineman entering the draft by any means, Otah would benefit from a good strength and conditioning program. He is a back-bender, which will give him some trouble against the better pass rushers in the NFL. Otah has particular trouble with speed rushers when asked to block out on an island, especially when he is called upon to change directions quickly. He possesses classic size for a tackle but on the downside, it also limits his mobility. He suffered a sprained left ankle as a junior but did not miss time.
Overall: A transfer from Valley Forge Military Academy where Clady started both seasons and was also a basketball standout, he went on to start 24 consecutive games at Pittsburgh. Named as the offensive team captain, Otah’s most notable game this past season included a spectacular performance against South Florida defensive end George Selvie, in which he held the pass rusher to zero sacks and just two tackles. A raw overall game, Otah did not begin playing organized football until his senior year of high school. He is still learning how to play the position, as noted by Panthers head coach Dave Wandstedt. Having just two years of experience against top competition will make some teams wary. He has upside, with some work that lies ahead.
Our View: A former JUCO prospect, Otah has all the furnishings that make for an outstanding pro. He has the chance to jump into the spotlight after playing just two seasons at the Division I level. His consistency and ability to finish blocks project him as a high day-one draft pick. You will hear the term “upside” thrown around often on draft weekend, but it may not be more applicable to anyone in this draft than Otah. Only Subscribers Click below to sign up
