According to sources, NFL teams were informed on Wednesday that this year's NFL Supplemental Draft, which was scheduled for next week has been canceled after the deadline came and past without any prospects completing the necessary paper work.

"Yes, it was a little surprising as in recent years this has become more of useful tool for players with extenuating circumstances", explained one high-ranking NFL official.

In fact, last year the Baltimore Ravens acquired former Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither while former Georgia defensive back Paul Oliver was selected by the San Diego Chargers.

The first Supplemental Draft was held over 30 years ago (1977) and over the past ten years a pair of players chosen via this method have achieved Pro Bowl-level status; Jamal Williams (San Diego, DT) and Mike Wahle (Seattle, OL).

Since April's NFL Draft there was speculation that a few prospects might opt for using the Supplemental Draft, including Oklahoma State senior tight end Brandon Pettigrew (off-field), Mississippi State senior offensive lineman Michael Brown (off-field), Florida State junior wide receiver Corey Surrency (JC recruit/academics), Shaw senior defensive tackle Callahan Bright and Toronto (CFL) running back Da'shawn Thomas.

One other name that had been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Supplemental Draft was former highly-recruited prep linebacker Willie Williams, who has spent time at the U-Miami and Louisville, but has found himself involved in a number of off-field issues. However, there is good news to report as Williams is fully registered with the intention to play his senior year at Glenville State in West Virginia.

Williams has seemingly taken a positive turn both in the class room and off-field as the coaching staff at Glenville State had a number of hurdles for him to reach before allowing him to officially join the team.
