Here’s a look at the top senior cornerback prospects entering the 2010 season:
Ras-I Dowling, Virginia – At 6’2, 200 pounds, Dowling has a phenomenal blend of size, speed and coverage capability. He stated that the reasons for returning to Virginia for his senior year was to hone his craft, which includes improving his tackling, reaction time and leadership skills. If he achieves those goals look for Dowling to earn sure-fire first round status.
Prince Amukamara, Nebraska – The 6’1, 205-pound Amukamara had a coming out party in 2009 and was selected as First Team All-Big 12, while earning the reputation around the conference as a lockdown corner. His combination of size, speed and ball instincts are rare. He will need to work on becoming more consistent and overcoming some of the mental lapses he experienced during his first year as a starter.
Kendric Burney, North Carolina – A playmaker with the ball in his hands, Burney returned two interceptions for a touchdown last season and set a new ACC record for return yardage. That being said, even with a follow-up strong senior performance, Burney will need to have a good postseason and flash that 4.4-speed at the combine in order to make up for scouts who have their doubts about his 5’9 height.
Curtis Brown, Texas – Strong, agile and fast, he is known simply as ‘The Cat’ by his teammates for his sneaky quickness. Brown has tremendous athleticism and has also been used at wide receiver, the position he played in high school. You may remember Brown falling victim to Michael Crabtree a few years back but Brown has since made a name for himself in his own right. He also has 32 career special teams tackles.
Rashad Carmichael, Virginia Tech – A film junkie who watches countless hours of game tape, Carmichael has reportedly been timed as low as 4.26 in the forty-yard dash. One of his strengths is playing man coverage, which will certainly help boost his draft stock. Carmichael has been quoted as saying that he wants to work on improving his fundamentals and leadership qualities.
Others To Watch: Charles Brown, North Carolina Devon Torrence, Ohio State Brandon Hogan, West Virginia Brandyn Thompson, Boise State Marcus Gilchrist, Clemson
