For three years, El Paso made The Texas vs. The Nation All-Star game a surprising February success.
Now the Sun City may be a victim of the expectations it raised.
A crowd of 26,041, smaller than last year's 42,000, watched the fourth edition and what may turn out to be the college football showcase's final game played in El Paso.
After securing the Pro Football Hall of Fame sponsorship, CEO Kenny Hansmire expected a bigger crowd and said the game may be moved to Dallas or San Antonio next season.
"I'm very disappointed," he said. "We've kept raising the level of our game. For the Hall of Fame to be supporting this game and only 26,000 people after we had 42,000 last year, it's very disappointing. El Paso wanted to be an NFL city. To have the Hall of Fame logo out there, we look at it as a big disappointment."
The Senior Bowl, played in Montgomery, Ala. and considered the No. 1 college all-star game, drew 40,646 this year. The other major postseason all-star game, the East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla., drew 8,345 and is rumored to be going out of business, according to Hansmire.
"We have the logo of the Pro Football Hall of Fame out here," Hansmire said. "El Paso wants to be an NFL city? Good luck."
