Want to know who's on our radar for '09, then check out the latest preview from our small-school expert Josh Buchanan.
Over the next few weeks I will highlight some small school players to watch for next season that scouts have already taken notice of. In each installment I will highlight some names who will be on the NFL radar this coming season.
QB NATHAN BROWN, CENTRAL ARKANSAS, 6014, 212, 4.90E
Brown earned 1st team All-Southland honors and OFF POY after throwing for 3,084 yards and 26 touchdowns. He has thrown 69 career touchdowns and over 7,000 career yards. He is a great leader off the field who sometimes forces throws and makes mistakes. He has the arm to make all the throws and brings great leadership to the field. He did not run in the spring so his street value should go up if he can run in the sub 5.0 range. He enters the season with a 4th or 5th round projection by many.
OT NICHOLAS HENNESSEY, COLGATE, 6053, 295, 5.31
Hennessey, a two-year starter, earned Second team All-Patriot League honors last year at right tackle due to his pass blocking and ability to reach. He does a good job of cutting guys off and riding them out of the play. He displays a strong punch in pass pro and has the ability to add weight. He is a mid to late round prospect with good potential.
OG CORNELIUS LEWIS, TENNESSEE STATE, 6042, 321, 5.00E
Lewis is a highly athletic player moving from left tackle to right tackle for the 2008 campaign. The 2007 Second team All-OVC tackle transferred from Florida State due to several incidents but is considered a good kid. He is not stiff at all and very athletic. He runs like a deer and does a good job of getting to the second level. His lack of height will probably force a move to guard in the NFL. He is all over the board as some have him as high as the 2nd round and as low as the 5th round. Most have him projected to go in the 4th round but that could rise due to his upside.
RB JAVARRIS WILLIAMS, TENNESSEE STATE, 5100, 218, 4.50E
Williams has been productive throughout his career earning Second team All-OVC honors as a freshman and sophomore. He ran for 1,233 yards in ’06 and 872 yards in ’05. Last year he ran for 1,187 yards but was snubbed from the All-OVC teams. Many estimate him to run in the 4.5 range but could surprise and run in the 4.4-range in the postseason. He enters the year with a late round projection from most scouts.
