Whether you are looking for news on the 2008 and 2009 NFL Drafts, Pro Day Reports, Stars of Tomorrow high school recruits or NFL free agent impact and analysis, no one covers the world of football like the NFL Draft Bible, Powered By All Access Football. We are 24.7.365 Football! Our Small School Spotlight Series continues...
Over the next few weeks I will highlight some small school players to watch for next season that scouts have already taken notice of. In each installment I will highlight some names who will be on the NFL radar this coming season. QB BILLY MALONE, ABILENE CHRISTIAN, 6026, 236, 4.95 40 Malone originally committed Texas in high school but ended up at Tulane where he redshirted in 2002. After sitting out 2003 and 2004 due to a medical condition he came out of nowhere to earn 1st team All-Lonestar South honors with 3,136 yards and 27 touchdowns as a sophomore. He then followed up with 3,914 yards and 37 touchdowns as a junior. He is a big kid with a strong arm but lacks great mobility. He will be a solid developmental prospect worth using a late round pick on. Malone should carry a 6th-7th round grade heading into the season.
RB BERNARD SCOTT, ABILENE CHRISTIAN, 5102, 190lbs, 4.49 40 Scott started his career at Central Arkansas where he was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year after putting up 1,026 yards and 11 touchdowns on 163 carries in 2004. He then transferred to Blinn JC. He was named a 1st team All-American after leading his team to a 12-0 season and the NJCAA national championship. He finished the season with 1,892 yards and 2y touchdowns on the season. That was just an omen of what was to come. He burst on the scene at ACU with 2,165 yards and 35 touchdowns on 8.6 yards per carry. He was the runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy and earned 1st team All-America honors as well as offensive back of the year in the Lonestar Conference South Division. Expect Scott to earn a late round grade from most teams heading into the season.
DE DEXTER MANLEY, WEST TEXAS A&M, 6026, 280lbs, 4.64 40 Manley’s road to his final season has been rough. He played basketball in high school before landing at Santa Monica College and then transferred to Oregon. He finished with 8 tackles and 3 sacks in 2006 but decided to transfer from Oregon to West Texas A&M. He only played in 3 games last year due to injury. He is strong, fast, and has great upside (only 3 years of football experience). Due to lack of film he will more than likely get an incomplete grade from scouts but has the tools to eventually end up a mid to late round prospect.
DE KIRBY GRIFFIN, CALIFORNIA PA, 6005, 264lbs, 5.14 40 Griffin was expected to be a senior last year but received an extra year. He finished with 69 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks as a junior to earn 2nd team All-America honors. He enters 2008 as a three-time 1st team All-PSAC selection from two years at California PA and one season at Indiana PA. He has experience at DT, DE, and ILB. Due to his lack of height, a little baggage, and lack of speed he will earn a free agent grade and must stay clean until the draft or he might not get a shot.
