A look at the Redskins day one selections in the 2008 NFL Draft.
As a Washington Redskins fan it is tough to watch the NFL Draft. Usually the skins trade their picks before the draft for too many high priced free agents that don’t work out.
This year’s draft appeared to be no different when they traded the 21 overall selection to the Atlanta Falcons to get out of this year’s first round. Coach Zorn’s impact was instantly felt when the terms of the trade were announced. Washington received the 34th and 48th overall pick of the 2nd round 103rd overall pick of the 4th round for that 21st overall selection.
It was known that Zorn would go after taller receivers and he did that. It was a total surprise that their top receiver, Devin Thomas, would fall to them. His selection was a no-brainer. The Michigan State product gives them size (6’2, 210) and speed (4.40). He burst on the scene with 79 catches for 1,260 yards and 8 touchdowns last year. He entered the draft early on a hot streak and followed it up with a good postseason. He is considered a boom or bust prospect.
They followed that up with the selection of USC TE Fred Davis to give them an athletic pass catching threat at the position at 48 overall. Davis lacks ideal size but has the ability to stretch the field and gives them a 6’3, 254-pound target with 4.67 speed.
Their last pick was at 51 where they took Oklahoma’s Malcolm Kelly. Some people considered Kelly a possible 1st round pick and he falls to them at 51 overall. His 6’4, 227-pound frame gives them another big receiver. The big difference between him and Thomas in terns of measurables is that he is slower (4.68) but is a little bigger. He gives Jason Campbell another big play target after they took Thomas and Davis.
The Redskins also acquired another 4th round pick and should bring in solid role players for next year on day two.
