The Colts' third receiver job is expected to come down to Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, according to ESPN.com.
Mancini’s Take: Paul Kuharsky has been to practices and is reporting that Collie and Garcon are very close. While Garcon is a physical playmaker who can manhandle d-backs in the red zone, Collie has arguably the best set of hands in this year’s rookie class. The fourth-rounder is elusive and physical in his own right. Roy Hall is also in the mix here, but he’s seems to be more of a complementary deep threat. This battle is far from over. Cue up the ole Frank Stallone tune, 80’s man.
Mandel's Take: I'm not sold on either of these guys and I wonder how long it'll take before Peyton Manning starts whining about the lack of solid wide receiving options in Indy. The loss of Marvin Harrison's presence is going to affect this team more than they think, and although I agree with the Rev that Collie will wind up being the number three guy, I don't think the Colts are simply going to be able to plug him in and pick up where they left off. Remember, Anthony Gonzalez didn't have the season many expected him to have in 2008 and now he's the number two guy. Reggie Wayne--who is coming off of an off-season by his standards--will have to have a huge season if the Colts' offense is going to maintain its lofty status. Then again, with the drafting of Donald Brown the Colts may decide to run the ball a bit more in 2009. It'll be interesting to watch in any case.
