The Leading Authority of the NFL Draft

Singletary Not Buying GM’s Hype on QB

49ers coach Mike Singletary threw water on GM Scot McCloughan's rave review of Alex Smith's progress this offseason, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "Nothing means anything until (Smith is) out there facing some live bullets," Singletary said. "All of a sudden, all form and technique and everything else goes when you've got guys coming at you."

Mancini’s Take: Right on, coach! Smith has looked nothing but confused so far in regular season action. You can tell me all you want about his poise and intelligence in June, but Singletary wants to see it in September, October, and November. The NFL isn’t a beauty pageant. Guys like Joey Harrington look like Hall-of-Famers with shorts on, but hitting an open receiver with blood-thirty linebackers on your heels during a zone blitz is a horse of a different color. Singletary speaks the truth, Rosstradamus. I like this kind of party!

Mandel's Take: Singletary is, of course, correct. But does he have to tell us everything that's on his mind? Is there a secret coaching technique that says "kick a guy when he's trying to regain his confidence"? Does he think that his team is better served by these public statements? I see nothing good coming from this type of statement, but I can clearly see some negative in it as far as the team is concerned. If Smith is unable to prove himself during game action, he'll continue to be a bust. We all know this--why does Singletary need to sound off like a television analyst? Is it that important to him that people hear his opinion? Making strong, public statements is fine...but Singletary needs to pick his spots with a bit more discretion. Mike--you have the job now. Act like it.
