NFL: Ones To Watch

Armando Salguero, of The Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins WR Patrick Turner has impressed during training camp. He beat CB Will Allen twice during one-on-one workouts Tuesday, Aug. 4. The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers LB Manny Lawson has put on nearly 20 pounds since his rookie season. He now feels he has the power necessary to make an impact while rushing the quarterback.

The Skinny: I'm supposed to be impressed because he beat Will Allen in a workout? Sorry, I'm not sold. Sure, he looks good in practice, but his lack of speed and inability to separate won't be revealed in practice. The Fish have three receivers with defined roles, at least for now. If healthy in week one, Greg Camarillo is going to start opposite Ted Ginn, Jr., with Davone Bess in the slot. That's a sneaky good trio. Turner is going to have to fight for playing time and might wind up being a decent red zone target, but it's Bess that will emerge this season. As for Lawson, he's going to get most of his work as a pass rushing defensive end. His sack totals are going to rise in the new defensive scheme and the added weight will help toward that end. The Niners, under Mike Singletary, seem to realize they need to emerge from the middle of the NFL's sack pack if they're going to make the playoffs in 2009. That they are actually doing something about it should encourage both their players and their fans.
