NFL: Monroe Wasting No Time

Jaguars.com reports first-round pick Eugene Monroe is expected to be the Jaguars' opening-day left tackle, over William "Tra" Thomas.

Mancini’s Take: This move makes a lot of sense. Monroe is probably a better pass blocker at this stage than Thomas. The rookie has excellent feet that are constantly moving in pass protection, making him tough to beat on both inside and outside moves, as well as bull rushes. The 34-year-old Thomas has been beat up through the years and can’t consistently provide the type of pass and run blocking the Jaguars need. But he does give the team some nice insurance and can flash his old drive blocking skills in a pinch if needed.

Mandel's Take: Why did Jacksonville sign Thomas? Because they had no idea that Monroe would slide to them. Now they're in a situation where they, as the Rev said, have insurance. But can they literally afford that insurance? Tra Thomas ain't AFLAC, if you know what I'm saying. He's a bit too much of a luxury for a team that needs help all over the field; can they have a guy like that sitting on the bench? Doubtful, Rev. Thomas is watching the Monroe child and probably thinking, "I remember what it was like to be him."
