NFL: Levi Jones Stands His Ground

According to the Arizona Republic, free agent OT Levi Jones is waiting to find a team that will give him a starting job and pay him accordingly, his player rep says. Jones is reportedly unsatisfied with a one-year proposal presented to him by the Arizona Cardinals.

Mancini’s Take: It is believed that Jones is looking for more than $1 million, which is fair when you’re being considered for a left tackle position. However, the former Bengal’s knee issues don’t warrant a major investment on the part of any team. When he’s on the field, he’s a technically sound lineman, but the folks out in Cincy can tell you about how many games he missed. To me, it looks as though the Cards will probably end up signing him, but Jones is just trying squeeze the team for a few more shekels. Other teams have also shown interest, but hooking up with the Red Birds gives the big lineman his best chance of winning. He needs to prove he can stay healthy and earn himself a better contract down the road. Right now he’s in no position to bargain. Tell me I'm wrong, Ross man.

Mandel's Take: Another player who doesn't realize he's not in a position to demand anything. He can ask for whatever he wants, but the bottom line is there isn't a huge market for Jones. He's coming off leg surgery and has had back trouble as well. Plenty of teams have kicked the tires on the big man, but they've concluded that he's not worth a $1+ million investment. Jones will have to eat some humble pie, sign for close to the minimum, and prove he's recovered if he wants to land a bigger deal next time around.
