NFL: Crabtree Relegated To The Bench?

Due to his current contract situation, 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree will not be an immediate starter heading into this season, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Mancini’s Take: There’s nothing wrong with this decision. Why force the rookie into the starting lineup, when the team already has a plethora of other viable options? Not only is Crabtree coming off a well-noted foot injury, but receivers from collegiate spread offenses typically require more time to adjust to the pro level. That being said, I expect Crabtree to eventually begin making plays once that adjustment period is complete this year. The former Red Raider doesn’t have to run deep routes to dazzle the crowd. Ok Mandel, it’s time for you throw your bouquets at the standout pass catcher.

Mandel's Take: I would do that, Rev, but this isn't about what he will be. It's about the difference bewteen what Crabtree thinks he is right now and what the Niners are willing to pay him. Mike Singletary said he's "not the least bit concerned" about Crabtree's contract issues. He should be. This is a big time problem--Crabtree wants more than he's due and the Niners aren't about to give it to him. San Francisco is offering the standout receiver number ten overall money, but Crabtree's camp believes he deserves more. In this case, my man Crabtree is wrong--he needs to realize that he was the number ten pick, for whatever reason, and that that is what he's going to get paid. He might wind up being Larry Fitzgerald, but he ain't there now and certainly doesn't deserve that kind of money. It's ironic that Singletary himself held out in his rookie season; now the shoe is on the other foot.
