NFL: Colts Building Depth At Wide Out

Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports the Indianapolis Colts may not have a clear-cut No. 3 receiver this year. WRs Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie may split the role. Garcon has looked very good during training camp and is more confident this season, while Collie has been working hard in the slot.

The Skinny: Garcon, a former Division III player at Mount Union, now has a season of learning under his belt and perhaps more importantly, has drawn the attention of Peyton Manning. The Franchise has stated that Garcon needs to "step up" this season, clearly an endorsement and a motivating statement if you're Garcon. Should he win the number three job, it would put Anthony Gonzalez in the slot, where he's both more confortable and effective. However, Collie shouldn't be written off by any means. The former BYU star would give the Colts some flexibility with their top two receivers by playing the slot when matchups favor Gonzalez or Reggie Wayne splitting out wide. With Donald Brown helping the running game and the two young receivers coming along, the Colts are going to be just fine...offensively.
