| NFL: Chris Houston, We Have a Problem | ||||

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that following a dismal performance in Saturday's preseason game against the Chargers, the team is wondering whether starting CB Chris Houston is starter-worthy. Houston was burned repeatedly as the Chargers bolted out to a 21-10 lead with both first teams on the field. The Skinny: It's a whole lot different when there are playoff expectations, isn't it? Last season, the Falcons could be patient--no one expected them to contend for a post-season spot. However, that's no longer the case and this defense is not one which will allow this team to take the next step as currently constituted. They need help at several positions...help that must improve the Falcons' third down defense, which--and I know it's "only" preseason--allowed the Chargers to convert seven out of eight first downs in the first half. Coach Mike Smith couldn't deny his team's problems, saying, "“On third down, it was not a good defense. It’s definitely something we have to work on and we will work on...We’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s not one unit; it’s a team defense. It starts up front and goes from the linebackers to the secondary, and there was not one group that succeeded on third-and-long.” At least the coach understands the problem...there are plenty of headmen in the league who are blind to their teams' deficiencies. Look for Atlanta to be active on the waiver wire, something they used very effectively last season.
