NFL: Carriker Goes Under the Knife

The St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting that Rams defensive lineman Adam Carriker will have surgery today to repair his shoulder. He's already been placed on IR and will need around four months just to rehab the injury. It's the second shoulder surgery for the former Nebraska Cornhusker.

The Skinny: Carriker is a very talented player, but he's been snakebit by injuries. To say the Rams need all the help they can get is an understatement, and frustration has to be setting in in regard to Carriker. Gary Gibson has been filling in for Carriker--clearly not a bad job to have--but he's nothing more than a backup, journeyman-type of player. The Rams were 31st in the league defensively last season and despite new coach Steve Spagnuolo's expertise, he's not a magician. Expect the Seahawks to put up some offensive numbers in week one, and for the Rams defensive ineptitude to continue indefinitely.
