Stuart Schweigert is reportedly competing with Daniel Bullocks, Marquand Manuel and Kalvin Pearson for playing time at strong safety.

Mancini’s Take: Is that THE Stuart Schweigert? Yikes, I didn’t realize how badly the Lions were hurting for a strong safety. Schweigert is another dude who can’t tackle. I’m sorry, but I know some people like his aggressiveness and intelligence, but all I remember about him is all the tackles he whiffed on in tandem with Michael Huff in Oaktown. As far as the others go, Bullocks is a nice in-the-box hitman who won’t embarrass himself in coverage, and may be the best choice. Manuel, on the other hand, couldn’t cover me on a five-yard curl route, while Pearson hasn’t shown much playmaking ability.

Mandel's Take: No, it's Stuart Little, who do you think we're talking? Schweigert had a pre-season cup of coffee with the Giants and proved only one thing: he can't tackle. What good is a strong safety if he can't tackle? It's like having a quarterback that can't throw. The Lions' secondary is one of their many weak spots and we will be seeing a lot of their DBs on highlight shows. Unfortunately, it'll be the backs of their jerseys that we see as they chase receivers down the field. They need rookie Louis Delmas to make an immediate impact back there, or the Lions will be looking at another dismal defensive season.
