Packersnews.com reports that Former Minnesota Vikings great Fran Tarkenton would like to see Brett Favre end his retirement to play quarterback in Minnesota. But that isn’t because Tarkenton wants to see Favre succeed. “I kind of hope it happens, so he can fail,” Tarkenton told an Atlanta radio station Tuesday.
Mancini’s Take: Tark’s always been an outspoken personality, but wishing that a particular individual bombs isn’t cool. Guys don’t do that. If you’re not a fan of a team, you can hope that team goes 0-16, but to put a pox on one single person is petty. With all that being said, I’m sick of Favre too, as most of us are. Give Tark credit for basically calling him selfish. Favre does think it’s all about him, and will continue to act that way as long as we from the media continue to keep track of his every word, meal, and bowel movement. The 40-year-old needs to stay out of the limelight for an entire year to get back in the public’s good graces, and take a job as a broadcaster.
Mandel's Take: That's Incredible! Seriously, I understand Tark's take on the whole Favre situation--he thinks, as many of us do, that Favre had been jerking the Packers around for quite some time, then tried to play the "woe is me" card as his selfishness was exposed. Tarkenton was also miffed that Favre desperately wanted to play for Green Bay's bitter rival, and wanted to do so out of spite. To me, Favre started the pettiness with his Viking dreams--he didn't want to play there to win, he wanted to play there to stick it to Green Bay. That's a bit more petty to me than anything Tarkenton could say. Tark is essentially summing up his feelings on the "modern player" and I have absolutely no problem with it. We want players (and former players) to speak their minds and complain when they don't...we can't suddenly decide to only enjoy their opinions when they suit us. Rant on, Sir Francis!
