Latest Attempt to Get TE Back on Track

49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye reiterated that he plans to utilize TE Vernon Davis more as a receiver than a blocker.

Mancini’s Take: Here we go again. Every year we have to hear about Vernon Davis’ great potential, and how THIS is the year he becomes the next big thing. At some point, we must accept that the muscle-bound tight end is an average tight end, who just happens to run fast, jump high, and look like Charles Atlas with his shirt off. He’s coming off a season in which he recorded a meager 31 receptions despite playing in 16 games. This guy hasn’t been able to run a route to save his life until this point and, to me, he’d really benefit from shedding the extra bulk in order to become more flexible. Are you tired of being teased by this cat, Rosstradamus? Davis is the type of player who’ll make a couple of nice plays and disappear for a month.

Mandel's Take: I was done with Davis a long time ago, Rev. The guy flatters to deceive and we end up hearing more about his bad attitude than any receptions he makes. Sure, he'll make a highlight reel or two, but when I hear coaches saying they're going to use him more, it makes me laugh. We could take quotes from the past three off-seasons and plug them in here--it's a broken record. This year's twist on the theme is that Jimmy Raye's system is going to be perfect for Davis. Sure it is. I refuse to buy into anything having to do with the constantly disappointing Davis until I see him perform for an entire season. Let's not forget--Davis was the sixth overall pick in the 2006 Draft! To say he's been a bust is being generous.
