Garcon Delivers!

Coach Jim Caldwell says second-year man Pierre Garcon is "coming along" and considers him a candidate for the Colts' third receiver job, according to Colts.com.

Mancini’s Take: Bill Polian has thrown Garcon’s name around as a possible breakout player more than once as has coach Caldwell. Garcon has by no means accomplished anything, but he’s worth tracking during the preseason. The D-III standout is a smooth runner with deep speed and hands to catch the ball in tight spaces. He paid his dues as a special teams’ performer last year, and he may just be primed for a significant role in the Colts offense. Heaven knows, Indy needs someone to step in for the departed Marvin Harrison, Ross man. What I think makes this guy a player on the come is his prowess in the red zone. As a collegiate at Mount Union, Garcon scored 60 touchdowns. He did all that with not only his track speed, but also with his physical play, which makes him a most intriguing wide out.

Mandel's Take: I'm not sold. Listen, I know the Colts have a solid track record when it comes to developing receivers, but we heard a lot of hype about Anthony Gonzalez going into last season and he didn't make the leap. So why should I buy into a second-year D-III guy like Garcon? His college track record was impressive, but to expect him to be a solid contributor this coming season seems like a bit much. Garcon does possess the size and speed, but his lack of experience is still a hindrance. I need to see Peyton Manning trust this kid before I'm willing to say he can  ball. There isn't a lot of time for Garcon to learn on the job--the Colts need someone to produce from the number three spot and that requires more than just having speed.
